Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
I just moved Andrew over a month or two ago. He is 4.5, will be 5 in May. He was in his Britax Marathon until that point.

Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
Probably at age 4 I will make the switch. However, my MIL picks Katherine up from school on Thursdays and brings her to dance and I didn't bother buying her a whole new carseat--I got a booster (a Graco I believe) and so she went in that at exactly 3 years old.

DS is currently 5.5. He'll probably go into a booster at 6.

Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
With Caiden he was 2.5-3 yrs old. We first put him in a Compass B500 booster up until he was 3.5-4 yrs old and he's been in a backless Graco booster ever since. I LOVE both of those!
Now with Connor he's almost 2.5 yrs old and big enough for the same booster (Compass), so I'm probably going to put him in that in the upcoming weeks. I need to order a new one.
The only reason I put the boys in a booster so young is that their regular car seats (Evenflo Triumph) is too tight on them. It's very difficult to get them in and out. Both boys are just really tall and grew out of them quickly. They were both out of an infant carseat by 2.5-3 months old.
It's fine to put them in a booster as long as they fit the requirements of one. Connor was big enough for one at his 2 yr check up. Now he's almost 2.5 yrs. old so I definitely know he's big enough.

We switched to a booster seat at just before 3, Noah was too heavy for me to life into the car seat. I'm guessing you mean this kind of seat:

We switched Damien when he was 3 and 1/2 but I got a booster with a 5 point harness, we switched him to the booster that you use with a seat belt when he was almost 5.

What are the weight/height requirements for using the booster?
I thought it was 4yrs and 40 pounds.
I asked my ped last visit about moving my daughter to one, so I wouldn't have to buy another for my son (my daughter will be 4 in April) and the ped said NO! She said keep her in the car seat as long as possible. They are still little and she wasn't 4 or 40lbs

Thank Jamie...that's what I thought- 40 lbs. I can't wait...Alex is getting heavy for me to put her in the seat (when she won't go in on her own), plus all of the winter bulk!

Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
According to the NY DMV site - they are supposed 4 yrs old and 40 lbs.
Here's one blurb from there site If under age four, he or she must be properly secured in a federally-approved child safety seat that is attached to a vehicle by a safety belt or universal child restraint anchorage (LATCH) system. A child under age four who weighs more than 40 pounds may be restrained in a booster seat with a lap and shoulder belt.
My DD is 2 1/2 but she is no where close to 40 lbs (she was 25lbs at 2) so I think I will be waiting until she is 4 to move her.

Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
My daughter is 4.5 but she's barely 34 pounds. I have a booster in John's car (because it's a headache in a small 2 door Accord, but I have her in the carseat in the van. I just feel safter, etc.

DD will move to a 5-point harness booster seat at 3 so we can use the carseat for our 2nd DD.

Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
Robbie got switched at 3(ish). But it is a 5 point harness in the main seat (which he HATES and considers babyish). Noah is still in a car seat at 5 and a half... but he is VERY small. We will be getting him a booster seat as soon as he hits 50lbs.

Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
Kev moved 2.5ish to a 5 point harness high back booster and was attached with LATCH. He was well over the requirements of that booster (weight, height and age) at that time.
He is almost 4 and at the 40lb mark so soon we will be changing it to the belt restraint. The 5 point harness goes to 40lbs and 43 inches (I think he is just shy of 43 in) on my seat.

Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
Is a 5 point harness seat still considered a "booster seat"? I would think that if it has its own harness, it's a regular car seat. I always thought of a booster seat as something that uses the car's seatbelt. A booster may or may not have a back, but it still uses the car's belt, and not it's own straps....

Yes they do make 5 point "booster" seats. Most of them are 3in1 type seats like the Graco Nautilus that convert later to a seatbelt. Some websites consider it a convertible while others list under a booster.
Extended 5-point harness fits kids up to 65 lbs. to keep them safer longer. Converts from 5-point harness to high-back booster for children 30-100 lbs. and backless booster for children 40-100 lbs. Steel reinforced frame provides strength and durability Three-position recline to get the correct installation and comfort Wider, padded armrests are extra comfy Head rest can be easily adjusted in one hand so it changes with child's growth Engineered and crash tested to meet or exceed: US Compliance Standard FMVSS213, New Car Assessment Program-peak crash force approximately 2X car seat standard and extreme car interior temperatures. EPS energy absorbing foam Cup holder & convenient side storage keep must-haves handy Open loop belt guides easily position your vehicle's seatbelt Recommended Use: 20-65 lbs., 27"-52" with 5-point harness; 30-100 lbs. 38"-57" as highback booster; 40-100 lbs. 40"-57" as backless booster

Re: Those that switched to booster seats in the car...
In 5-point harness mode, I would still consider it a regular car seat. There's no difference between that seat, and the convertible seat that I have. I use the seatbelt to hold it in because DS is too heavy for LATCH.
I definitely like the concept, though. You can get a smaller convertible seat, then switch to this when they get too big for the convertible. They are still in a car seat until 65 lbs, like many of the bigger car seats, then just keep adapting it as DC gets bigger.....
Our car seats go up to 65 lbs, so we'll probably just jump to the seat booster at age 6.
