Those that work or live in NYC...
do you feel that certain folks in NYC particularly have a death wish?
ie: bike messengers - the way they zip through the streets and cross in between cars and such?
or even...
pedestrians that can't wait more than four seconds at a red light and have to get to the other side of the street even though they don't have the right of way....or when they also cross in between cars at the red light?
Just curious....feel free to add to the list...

Re: Those that work or live in NYC...
yes- I often would freak over the people on bikes
and my swore I was going to get killed crossing the street- I would be talking and walking - and then hear a bus and run- so dumb

Re: Those that work or live in NYC...
YES!!!!!!!!!
I stare at amazement at both examples you provided.
Everyday I see people just walk out into traffic. Not just at a red light -- cars are driving towards them. THe driver beeps and the pedestrian that's WRONG starts cursing at the driver.
The bime messengers are just a hazzard. I saw some guy just being a jerk -- going too fast, didn't have the right away, weaving around people with the light etc. He tries to fly across 34th street @ fifth avenue and got hit by a car. I heard at least 5 people say GOOD. (he wasn't hit hard and got up right away but i don't know if he was hurt).

Or when people stand in the bus lane trying to cross the street and then a bus comes by almost hitting them and they just standing looking stuipid.. I always see that, one day it's going to be tragic for real..

Re: Those that work or live in NYC...
It's interesting that you post this because on Wednesday I was crossing 43rd at 7th - the light had changed in the pedestrian's favor but a bike messenger came flying through and took out a woman crossing the street. She was steps away from getting onto the sidewalk when he hit her. She went down flat on her back. The bike messenger remained upright on the bike. He said sorry and was ready to ride off - meanwhile she's still on the ground - but a couple of guys helped her up and stood in his way.
I felt so bad for her - it looked very painful.

me too. Actually, sometimes I think that I MUST have a death wish to be working in NYC because even if I wait for the light you always have some a$$ who whips around the corner because he can't wait for people to cross or a bike messenger who totally disregards the fact that I have the righter way and almost hits me.
This reminds me: remember that guy a few months ago, or last year or something, who was stuck in a two inch space between a bus and a truck? I really don't know how they do it!

Re: Those that work or live in NYC...
You're exactly right. And, if you don't go right away, you get stuck because all the cars keep turning. And, all the jerks that went through the yellow and red light KNOWING that they would be stuck in the intersection don't let you cross once the cars in front of them start moving.
It's like get when the gettin' is good!
Can you tell I feel strongly about this?

Re: Those that work or live in NYC...
I think everyone is always in a rush and darting across the street, or doing something else dangerous is just a part of living/working here.
I am not sure it's a death wish per se-- we just like to live on the edge.

Re: Those that work or live in NYC...
I'm a born and raised Brooklyn-ite and have always worked in Manhattan. However, the days that I do not commute through Public Transportation, I drive in.
It just scares the heck out of me that people are just in such a rush that they don't care that a car is less than a centimeter away from them!
We just have to all remember that the person driving a car is a human and make mistakes, and sometimes it won't click in their head that ther's a pedestrian crossing like that and won't stop short.
I say this today b/c I just watched as a woman got hit by a car (not a black car or taxi) b/c she was crossing against the light on a street that wasn't backed up or anything, and unfortunately, she was at fault.
So ladies...PLEASE be CAREFUL!

Yes, people are crazy. I once saw an elderly woman get hit, flip up in the air and land in the crosswalk Luckily it was right outside of NYU med ctr!

Re: Those that work or live in NYC...
The other day I was running and I had the right of way to cross the street. This lady making a left almost ran me over. I always try to make eye-contact when I'm running so I'm sure they see me. This ****** was in la-la land. If I wasn't paying attention she would have ran me over. I called her an a$$hole, which was probably really loud because I had my ipod on. It's really crazy out there.

How about the delivery men on bikes - they are just as bad as the messengers!

Re: Those that work or live in NYC...
I grew up in Brooklyn and lived in Queens. I worked in the City for years; drove in there quite a bit. I have lived on Long Island for 28 years, but, whenever I go back I become another person. A typical New Yawkah! I wait for no one. I cross against traffic. I absolutely, positively can't stand tourists and I let them know when I brush past them. I stomp through the City like a storm trooper. It's as if I morph into this person I used to be when I was younger. On the upside, I've never been mugged. Probably because of the p**ssed off look on my face.
