I got the Pump In Style Orginial. It comes already with 4 bottles to pump into, the tubes for the air and the part that goes on your nipples.

The orginal is good if you plan on doing occasional pumping and plan to breastfeed mostly. If you plan on strictly pumping then I would get the advance. When you go to pick it up, on the side of the box it has a comparasion on what uses it is good for.

As far as accessories, I think the bags are good idea, the bag to sterilize in the microwave and definily tubes of lanoish cream. Put the cream on everytime after you bf or pump. It really helps with the drying in the beginning.

Now this is JMO but I wouldnt buy one just yet. I knew I was going to bf and I got lucky since my SIL had a Medela Breastpump that I could borrow. Well I dont bf anymore ( it wasnt working out for me and the baby).

Sometimes it dosent work out and you are left with a breastpump you cant return.
The hospital offer rentals on breastpumps...something to consider and you could always purchase one while the baby is here..if the bf'ing works out and you want to continue.

I agree-I was told the same thing by many BTDT moms so I'm just waiting and will rent from the hospital-it is covered by many insurance plans as well.

I plan on breast feeding but due to tests and or possible surgery I might have to pump for a few days or weeks. I was planning on buying a pump since I know I will definitely need and want one. I was told to definitely hold off because until the baby is born you won't know which one will be best for you and you can't return them once purchased even if it isn't open.

Who do you speak to about renting one from the hospital? I am not sure Winthrop offers rentals........Chat Icon

I was told by LC, Ped, at BF classes to wait a bit before buying a pump. Once the box is open, you cannot return it.

I was told not to use it right away either until my milk supplies comes. I am going to rent one first and see how it goes. Then if BF is for me, I will buy it.

I was told to ask the nurse or LC at Winthrop about renting the pump.

I also agree about renting one, if you are not going back to work, the hospital pump will help to keep your supply up brilliantly!

Each pump is different and depends what your situation is:

The times rental pumps are covered by insurance is if there is a problem with the baby and you can't physically feed them. (God forbid the baby is in the NICU for an extended period of time, etc)

If you are having severe supply issues renting a pump would be ideal because they are the strongest pumps. You can also use these for going back to work but they are more bulky than the Pump in Style. These rental pumps are great if you plan on exclusively pumping.

If you are going back to work and need a pump the Medela Pump and Style or Medula Pump in Style Advanced is ideal because you have the backback or shoulder bag, everything you need fits neatly in there and it is not too heavy.
A great cheaper alternative is the Ameda Purely Yours. I like that this was a close system like the rental pumps.

If you don't plan on pumping very often I still would recommend an electric pump or a good manual pump. These are great for when you need to go out for a few hours without your baby or if you want to feed the baby at the mall and don't want to BF in public or in the bathroom. Pumping for a few bottles is great to have the dad feed the baby too.

I hated pumping and BF the baby was so much easier! I pumped for work 2 x a day from the time the baby was 3 months until the week he turned 1. I BF for a few months after his first birthday when I was with him. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

ETA: Also if you do buy a pump I found the prices online were much better than in stores like BBB or BRU.
