Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
I delivered at LIJ last September and will again in May.
I had a really good experience. I requested a private room right when I got there, but I think we had to wait until the baby was actually born since it's a first come/first served thing. I had no intention of DH staying with me at all, and he didn't. I'm just a spoiled brat!
Anyway, I had a c/s and don't think I could have handled anyone in my room with me...I was in a lot of pain and shuffling bent in half around the room while other new moms were bouncing around probably would have put me over the edge. Plus, I had a lot of visitors, so it was good that way and also, I really wouldn't have wanted to deal with anyone else's visitors. Remember, I was in there for 4 days! i shared a bathroom with the girls on the other side of the wall.
The room was expensive though...probably around $300/night and not covered by insurance. Um, yeah, we didn't know beforehand I would end up with c/s so we didn't anticipate $1200!! The was I see it though...you're only going to give birth a handful of times, why not treat yourself? I've spent that much on a hotel room!
Anyhow...the experience itself was very good and I had never stayed in a hospital before either. The labor and delivery room was huge and gorgeous...unfortunately, had to move onto the OR. The nurses were all really nice too. Some of the aides could have had a better "bedside manner" though. All in all, very positive.
They have a breakfast buffet every morning out in the hallway, which was decent and the meals, well, they're hospital meals, ya know?
HTH!!

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
i delievered at LIJ twice. i had a csection with both babies and i had NEVER been in a hospital before that. with both babies, i was in a double room. i made friends with both my roomates and i loved having someone to talk to and share aches and pains with. my dh was not allowed to sleep over, but that was ok with me. i had nurses checking on me all night. not to mention the pain meds gave me a great nites sleep. i loved lij!! congrats to you.

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
I had my son & twin girls at LIJ. I didn't have a private room for either. For the most part your doing your own thing so, it didn't matter to me. My husband did not stay with me nor did I want him to. I mean you are so tired that you just want to sleep. They come in to check on you so he wouldn't get a good night sleep. And he needs his rest as much as you do. LEt the sleepless nights happen AFTER you bring the baby home.

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
I delivered at LIJ in April 2005. I'm will be delivering my second son in April 2007 at LIJ as well. I had a great experience at LIJ considering I went in on Thursday and didn't deliver until Saturday ( I was induced). The only thing that bother me was the fact that I got moved around three times. When I checked in I was put into an L&D room but moved after 14 hours because the cevidil didn't work ( My DH stayed that night). They moved me to a different room on another floor because they needed the L&D room. They later moved me again back to the 3rd floor but in a triage room until a L&D room opened up on Friday night. I had my son on Saturday. Overall the L&D nurses were amazing.
I requested a private room but unfortunately they had none left. I got put on the third or fourth floor. It is not the floor with the big nursery. My DH did not stay with me in this room. They have a small nursery on this floor. In any case, I got a 2 person room. My roommate had a C-section and was leaving the next day. So I had a private room for one night and didn't have to pay. In my case it worked out.

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
I delivered there May 2, 2006. I had a great experience and delivered naturally. As soon as i got there, I asked for an epideral before they even checked me. The nurses were laughing. They came pretty quick as soon as my doc okayed it. I got into a room right away as well. All of the nurses were friendly and helpful. MY husband wanted me to get a prvate room and I said no way. We can use the $300 for the baby.
It was fine. The other women in my room kept to themselves. Imean everyone is in the same position and pretty much in pain afterwards and tired so its not like you are sociallizing.

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
I delivered at LIJ in November 05 and had a really good experience. I requested a private room when I got there and they said they would try their best. Being that the maternity ward was packed that day by the time I gave birth they had no private rooms left not even 2 person room So I ended up in a 4 person room. The first night they brought one other mom in, then the 2nd day another and the day I left another mom. It was so much better than I expected. My main concern about the 4 person rooms was cleaniness. The staff kept the room VERY clean and the bathroom was spotless at all times. Dh was not allowed to sleep over in the 4 person room. But I didn't mind because I just wanted to sleep and wanted him to get as much rest as possible before the baby and I came home.

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
I delivered at LIJ Plainview last June. I did have my own room but they were only for vaginal (2 day stays) delivery and on first come first served basis. DH didn't sleep over but he stayed late and could have stayed. I'm glad I had my own room because I like my privacy but most people don't mind sharing. The night before "check out" they serve a very nice dinner for you and your partner (not sure if only at Plainview). My experience was good. BTW they don't allow extra people in the delivery room (just your partner).

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
I delivered at LIJ, and forgot to ask fro a private room, but they wound up just giving me one and it was the greatest thing.
Only thing I hated was that there was no shower in my room, not sure if it that is noraml for all rooms? I was on the floor above the delivering floor, not across the hall from L&D like most moms were, since my kids were in the NICU, they seemed to keep those moms seperate.

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
I just delivered at LIJ. The nurses were really nice however I ended up in room with 3 other people and DH was not allowed to stay with me. We were really upset because on the tour they said that he would be able to. Besides that, the experience for me in Labor and Delivery was better than when I was admitted to room. I couldnt wait to get home and was thanful that I only had to stay 48 hours...I hate hospitals also!!!

Re: THose who delivered at Long Island Jewish
Hey Nicole, I know how you feel, since I felt the same way. If it would ease your anxiety then you should get your own room. Though, I think you will be so tired that you will not want him to stay. He can stay until 11 or 12... go home and rest up the next day.
The delivery/recovery rooms in LIJ are really nice... he can stay over there and there is a pullout chair/bed that he can sleep on. I was in there for an entire day. I felt like I was in a hotel room. There was a stereo/tv and you can control your own heat.
