Those who have sent their kids to Saf T Swim PLEASE COME IN

Is it a form of torture for all kids - or just mine?

This was supposed to be his third lesson. I'm not even sure if DH was staying with him or leaving. He was crying so badly. This is a kid who LOVES the pool. Will stay in my family's pools for hours.

I'm thinking of calling and seeing if they will kind of hold my money for a few months and try again in the Spring (or just send Tyler) - I'm not even sure of their policy regarding this. I feel so bad, my parents paid for his for him because they thought he would love it, and it would be great for him.Chat Icon

ETA: I am so proud of my husband, he took him in instead of bringing him home. Jack is actually not crying in the pool right now (last week he was screaming the entire time)

It took about 3 lessons for DS to become comfortable and no longer cry the entire time. It does get better!

Re: Those who have sent their kids to Saf T Swim PLEASE COME IN

yes, torture.
DD is 3 years old, she's had 10 lessons so far.
The first one she screamed for the whole half hour. 2,3, and 4th time she cried the whole time. After that the crying stopped, but she literally gets sick and throws up either on the way or before we leave to go.
That being said, she's incredible in the water. She's not quite swimming, but I can 100% say that it has made a huge difference in her abilities.

Jack just turned 3 but I know plenty of people who started them earlier. We don't have a pool so I wasn't really in a rush to do it.

I will most likey start Tyler when he is 2 - but he is a wild child so the more he knows about being in a pool, the better.

Awww, I'm sorry that you have gone through this also. It is torture! I couldn't even take him this week because he was screaming for me the entire 30 minutes, I thought I was going to jump in and pull him out.

That's great that she's learning to swim though! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Those who have sent their kids to Saf T Swim PLEASE COME IN

I was afraid Troy would be terrified. This coming Saturday is his 3rd lesson.

The first was good for the first 2 minutes, then another little girl accidentally splashed him in the face and he freaked OUT! He cried and cried the rest of the lesson. The instructor finally brought him by the steps for the last 5 min and Troy played with toys - no crying.

Between that class and last week, we kept telling him if he gets splashed again, it's okay. We went away to a lake and there were TONS of kids, and some splashing- we reiterated the "It's okay if you get splashed a little."

We went back fr his 2nd lesson and he did GREAT! He cried for 2 min b/c he wanted to sit by the steps and play with the toys. He quickly stopped and was good.

Hope it gets better!!

DD started at 7 months old and DS started at 4 months old so they both love it, but I do SafTSwim will delay your sessions for as long as you want, but they won't refund your $$$. You can also use the deposits toward another child.

IMO, I wouldn't delay the session though, you'll probably have to start from square one again. Try and stick with it, he'll probably eventually get used to it. Does he have an instructor that is really good with him. I've seen instrustors in the past (HS students) who just really weren't that enthusiastic about working with the kids. What location are you going to?

Re: Those who have sent their kids to Saf T Swim PLEASE COME IN

Crashing..

I taught swim lessons at the town pool and at Saf T Swim when I was in high school. I will say, ALOT of younger kids had this reaction, even if they are fine at their home pool. It's a different environment, they don't usually know the instructor and they are being told to do something (kick, float, etc) rather than just play. It always got better and the kids learned to swim and about water safety.

ETA - we had children as young as 6 months, which was great because they have no fear of the water.

It was torture. DD was about 22 months. We got 6 private lessons as a gift. She cried for all six lessons non stop. They asked if I wanted to sign her up for the next session and I Chat Icon

For some it's torture.

If it were me - I would continue to take him the entire session - tears and all. It's all a part of te learning process - he will get used to it - most of the time it's the separation that upsets them most! Don't worry!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Those who have sent their kids to Saf T Swim PLEASE COME IN

My DD is doing awesome there but she started at 4 1/2. I have not signed up DS because I fear he will cry the whole time and it is expensive.

when i signed up DD, I was told i could freeze lessons or transfer them to DS. if you are only signed up for one session, I would probably just finish being you are half way through. If you are signed up for multiple sessions, I would freeze it.

I started DD on Father's Day, it is a Daddy and Me 6 week class, every Sunday, and DD LOVES it! She was 7 months old when she started. I don't know if that is why. She was never crazy about baths, but loves the pool!

Maybe he will get used to it!

He actually ended up doing amazingly tonight so I am SO happy. We will stick it out! If he freaked out again tonight I would have just finished the session off with Tyler.

Although every kid is different, I would have to say that about half the kids I taught at Saf-T-Swim were not happy the first few lessons. (And of that upset half, MOST were between 1 1/2 and 3 1/2)

As an instructor, you are taught to deal with the crying and the tantrums. I was kicked, punched, smacked, thrown up on constantly, and beaten up. You are told to call in a parent for RARE things. (Throwing up is not one. We clean it up and go about our business.) Many parents got upset and came in, but I would tell them to leave. So what? Your kid threw up on me? Your kid wants you to come in and take them away from the situation. Your child wants to manipulate you.

The main thing is: THEY ARE LEARNING, EVEN WHEN THEY ARE SCREAMING, PUNCHING AND CRYING.

I believe I stopped a lesson twice. Once a child was slathered in Aquafor and he was like a Greased Pig. I couldn't keep him in my arms. Another was when an 18 month old elbowed me so hard in the face that I began swelling so much that I couldn't see. (I wasn't a parent then back in 2004 and didn't realize such small people had such strength.) I was sent straight to the hospital for xrays of my cheekbone. But it wasn't broken.

If you have any specific question, please FM me. I suck at checking back on threads.

That's great Diana. Ale did really well today, but who knows? She may freak out next week -- I think she was mostly in shock today, lol.

I am glad Jack did better today!! Chat Icon They will continue to cross paths...Chat Icon
