Those who take Magnesium for migraine prevention...

How much of a dose do you take per day?
Do you see a difference in your migraine frequency and/or intensity?

Those who take Magnesium for migraine prevention...

I was instructed by my neurologist to take 500mg per day- I have not noticed a difference. I have been taking it for almost a year.

Those who take Magnesium for migraine prevention...

I take 1000mg per day. It helps but it does not prevent all of my headaches.

I'll just say to anyone be careful if you see Dr. Mauskop. I was his patient and he prescribed meds in such a way that the combo I was on resulted in me developing serotonin syndrome and being in the hospital. It was not fun, scary, and could have been fatal.

I hve to say that almost every migraine drug out there scares me to death.
The side affects are scarier than the migraine itself.
That is why I have been looking to more natural measures like magnesium, melatonin etc

I found when I took magnesium in the past that it really helped to decrease the frequency and severity.
It also helped to lessen the attack when taken when I felt it coming on.
I just forgot how much to take.

If you want to stick to vitamins you should consider taking riboflavin 400-500mg/day it has been shown to decrease the frequency of migraines. Coenzyme q 10 also has been shown to help decrease migraine frequency- I believe the recommended dose is 150mg and the gel caps are suppose to be better absorbed than the pills.
Another natural treatment is Petadolex (it is purified butterbur extract). It works well but if you are allergic to ragweed it can cause allergy like symptoms.

I have an amazing migraine specialist who treats with both natural and prescription treatments. Dr. Brian Grosberg (718) 405-8360

Re: Those who take Magnesium for migraine prevention...

At the instruction of my neurologist, I take 400Mg of Magnesium, 200 mg of Riboflavin (actualy I just take a 150mg B complex), CoQ10 (whatever dose the pills come in) and Butterbur extract. I was told it would take 4-6 weeks but it made a HUGE difference for me within a week

And no side effects from the butterbur?
I am ok with vitamins, but sometimes I worry about supplements- like the feverfew, butterbur etc...

The only side effect I have experienced from this regimen was that the magnesium umm..increased the frequency of my bathroom breaks at first, so i built it up slowly.

I have heard butterbur can make you gain weight and topamax makes you lose weight and since the switch I have def gained but there are other factors at play. I might try stopping the butterbur to see if my headaches still stay down and maybe I will lose weight.

ETA: I would not have taken butterfbur if it weren't at the direct instruction of my neurologist.

OK thanks!
In the past I was only taking magnesium and then melatonin at night and seemed to have good results.
I stopped when pregnant and after having the baby I didn't get another migraine- so I thought maybe it was hormonal somehow.
But now, 2 years later, I got one so I want to start up on the vitamin regimin again.
