Those who were positive for Group B Strep-IV question
Just found out I am positive for GBS and I have to have antiobiotics during labor.
Can anyone confirm whether or not this is a constant IV or will I be free at any point?
I am SO not looking forward to being hooked up to an IV

I had it with my second. I had it about an hour or so before I started pushing. It was definitely a while after the epidural and I couldn't move anyhow.

Re: Those who were positive for Group B Strep-IV question
I had it as well, but my delivery went way too fast (from start to finish 2 1/2 hours, in the hostpital for 10 minutes before DD arrived). Needless to say I never had the chance to get the antibotics, so I was freaking out. Everything turned out fine they just had to watch a culture for so many hours.

Re: Those who were positive for Group B Strep-IV question
I tested positive for Strep and when my water broke they told me to come right in. I went in and they hooked me up on the IV as soon as they confirmed my water did break (I had no contractions).

The IV is constant for everyone regardless of GBS. The antibiotics are every few hours until you deliver and they just get hooked up into your IV.

Re: Those who were positive for Group B Strep-IV question
I was negative for Strep B but was required to have antibiotics because I was delivering at 34 weeks & they weren't sure it was an infection.
They put it in the minute I went in & I had to keep it throughout labor. They left it in for awhile because I lost a lot of fluid/blood. I HATE needles. They took it out at 5am the next morning.

I was only hooked up while the antibiotics were being adminestered. When they do the IV just ask for a heplock.
The only downside is the antibiotcs burn like hell.

No, you can ask for a heplock and get disconnected once you get 1 bag of fluids in. As long as you keep drinking water they won't hook you up again.

Same here - except I was having contractions but wasn't dilated and put on pitocin right away. I was hooked up to the iv at all times.

Re: Those who were positive for Group B Strep-IV question
It not constant. I was positive for GBS and had an all natural childbirth. I would walk the halls when I was hooked up to the IV (they dose you every 6 hours-I forget how long it took to run it in, not too long). When I wasn't hooked to the IV I used the birth ball or was in the tub. It's definitely not as bad as it seems. I didn't find it interfered with my birth plan at all.

Yes, you are hooked up the hole time anyway with other IV. It's not like you'll really need to walk around at that point ...

That isn't true. IV is not standard for labor and delivery at least not where I gave birth. I wasn't hooked to monitors and if I wasn't GBS positive I wouldnt' have had IV's either. I was able to eat and drink during labor as I chose so need need for IV fluid.

Sorry you're right but it is becoming less and less the norm because most institutions do not allow eating or drinking during labor. If you have an epidural you need the IV for hydration.

This is great to hear. I am planning to be drug free as well (my mom did it with both me and my brother so she inspired me). I was afraid the IV would mean I would be parked in a bed and not free to roam.

I think MOST places won't let you eat or drink but I am using the Stonybrook Midwives and they actually have special privileges for their patients that include eating and drinking.

I was about to ask if you use a midwife because that is the few times I've seen women labor like they used to before all this medical equipment got in the way

Re: Those who were positive for Group B Strep-IV question
I had a midwife birth as well (not in NY though) and honestly it really made zero difference that I was GBS and the nurses at my hospital were really supportive of helping me have a natural birth. Are you going to have a birth plan? I think that was really helpful because once it was in my chart the nurses knew what I wanted and respected my wishes. I never laid on my back, tied to a monitor. The nurse was even nice enough to try her hardest to hear the heartrate with the under water doppler. She couldn't get it one time so I eventually got out so she could check it but it was really nice to have people working with me.
