Re: Those who's DC's are in PT for gross motor skill delay
They did a lot of work on the dyna-disc. It is a disc that sits on the floor that isn't a steady surface. This would be for trunk strengthening which was his weakness. They would have him replicate sit-ups (with assistance). Or he would sit on it and she would hold a ball above his head to get him to utilize those muscles.
Also, they would do a lot of weight shifting by pressing on his hips so he would understand that he needed to shift his weight from hip to hip for movement.

Re: Those who's DC's are in PT for gross motor skill delay
If you don't mind, could you tell me (or FM me) what prompted you to have your DS evaluated. I think our DS' are the same age, 8 months (octomom here) and I'm getting concerned about my DS. He started rolling belly to back at about 5 months but only started rolling back to belly in the last 2-3 weeks. He also isn't crawling. He lifts up high on his arms and pushes himself backwards, but that's it. He's not up on his knees at all. No one else seems concerned around here and my mom practically threw a fit today when i suggested an evaluation. TIA!

Not an expert, but a few things, number one as long as he IS rolling, that is what is good
Also, crawling is not a milestone, so it isn't something to go by. My DS didn't crawl until the weekend he turned one and some don't crawl at all

ITA. seems like your dc is on track. there is a wide range for what is considered "on time" for milestones. for example babies can walk between 10-16 months and it is totally normal.
for the original poster. both of my boys get pt although neither are technically delayed in gross motor milestones. they have/had quailty of movement issues and are low tone. when young they did a lot of therapy ball work. sitting on their butts and going side to su=ide and front to back and then on their belly the same. also reaching and pushing and pulling. my older ds does obstical courses now and weights.

Re: Those who's DC's are in PT for gross motor skill delay
thanks guys! i should mention hes also getting PT for torticollis. did any of the exercises hurt them?
pnbplus1...like the others said i think your DS is on target. Ian doesnt roll at all. and when on his belly he just does a push up or body surfs. he can sit, but not totally unassisted. if you're really concerned, it doesnt hurt to get an evaluation. the worst (or best) case is he doesnt qualify.

Sounds normal, my ds did not crawl until 9 months and he only went up on his knees about 1 week prior to crawling
eta - crawling isn't even considered a milestone anymore, some kids never crawl

DS has this for 2-3 times a week
they do stretching exercises and teach the family member how to help as well
