Those with cars equipped to hook up iPod?

I feel silly asking this but we just got a Ford Edge and there is a jack to hook up your iPod, but I'm not sure which cable we're supposed to use?

I only have the headphone cable and the cable to charge the iPod, is this something separate we are supposed to purchase or did it come with the iPod? I can't find my original box for my Nano though. Chat Icon

Thanks for any help, I'm seriously electronically-deficient. Chat Icon

I had to buy a DH a separate cable when I bought his Ipod. I got it at Radio Shack.

yes it's a different cable. You can find it at radio shack, each end of the cable looks like the piece you'd connect your headphones to the ipod with, if that makes any sense. So one end goes into the car the other end goes into the headphone insert on the ipod.

You just need a headphone to headphone cable (looks like it plugs into headphones on both sides). I also got mine at Radioshack

The jack is called an auxiliary jack - just tell Best Buy or Radio Shack that you need the cable to go from MP3 player to auxiliary jack in the car.

Re: Those with cars equipped to hook up iPod?

you can use a or b but not both

A) a 3.5 mm jack to 3.5 mm jack

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021802&p_id=4152&seq=1&format=2

b) your existing ipod cable plugs into the usb

Sync will index your ipod the first time which will take a while.

eta; i have an edge also...you should use the tutriol as it will teach you how to talk to your car

Hm. Okay, so I still need help with this (told you I was electronically-challenged Chat Icon)

I bought the Auxiliary jack and I followed the instructions but the "LINE IN" never showed up on the display panel. Also, when I used the iPod cable in the USB port the SYNC system told me that it couldn't index my iPod because it was missing album covers or something like that? Chat Icon I dunno, I'm so confused.

Re: Those with cars equipped to hook up iPod?

I have a different cable. It has a pointy thing on two ends and I hook up one to the car, and the other to the ipod. (Kind of like if I were hooking it up to a stereo). I still have to control the ipod through the ipod not the car. In my car, I have to hit the AUX button so that it can play.

What kind of car do you have? I have a Ford Edge and I have to hit the AUX button too. The directions say to hit it until you see "LINE IN" to show up on the display but it doesn't and I don't hear anything through the speakers. Chat Icon

When you insert the cable and you hit the AUX button, it tells you to look for "LINE IN" on the display panel, but I don't see it coming up...what am I doing wrong? I see it connecting to my phone and then Media System but nothing about LINE IN. Chat Icon

Re: Those with cars equipped to hook up iPod?

In my car you plug the power cord into the usb port. If it doesn't have the usb port than I honestly have no idea. I don't have an ipod, I have an iphone with music on it, but I know the ipod cord and the iphone cord are the same, because i have used my sisters cord to charge my phone.

Re: Those with cars equipped to hook up iPod?

i have an 08 edge so i don't know how the menu works in the new 09's...

On line-in, you can pretty much connect anything you want that outputs audio. My system plays stuff even though it can't index everything. That is using the USB connection. I recommend using your Ipod USB cable in your car...

Ok, I tried that too and it said it couldn't index because I need to fill in album covers and artists??? I do have two songs on my iPod that I took from one of DH's burned CDs, is this what's causing the problem?

Re: Those with cars equipped to hook up iPod?

As soon as I hit the Aux button...line in comes up. That's when I know I can play the ipod. Keep pressing the Aux button...
