Those with Dwarf or Miniature Japanese Maples...
...we just got one this spring and I know NOTHING about plants and trees so I was wondering- is it normal for it to drop it's leaves now that it's fall? I notice it has been thinning out and dropping leaves on the ground. I wasn't sure if this was normal or there was some kind of problem? I am assuming it is just like all other trees and will lose it's leaves in the fall, but I could have sworn I have seen them with all their leaves at this time of year... And with my black thumb I was getting worried.
Does anyone know?

Ours still has its leaves. Its still pretty full, but I havent noticed if they started to drop yet at all. It will defintely lose the leaves before winter though.

Re: Those with Dwarf or Miniature Japanese Maples...
Ours hasn't even changed color yet, much less dropped leaves. But it's about 20 years old, so I'd expect that.
We have a dwarf weeping birch in the front that loses it's leaves starting in August. I knew there were issues with it anyway but when I looked around, I saw a lot of the same type of birch were doing the same thing.
I think because it's young, it's going to act a little differently. We're getting enough rain, but make sure you don't let it dry out while it's young like that and I think you'll be fine.

Yes it's a brand new baby. The landscaper also told me to cover it with burlap the first winter because the bitter cold winds are not good for it when it's this young and not yet established
I am guessing that is why it dropped leaves so soon too.

Aww you have a baby tree.
I didn't know about the burlap but that makes sense, so if we get heavy snow or ice, it doesn't snap the delicate branches. I've seen people do that with small conifers that are alongside roads that get plowed, probably because of the salt spray.
I love Japanese Maples.
