Those with tomato plants

Do you have tomatoes yet? I have four plants that are now about 6 feet high but only a few tomatoes so far.

Anyone else?

Re: Those with tomato plants

I heard that the cherry tomatoes came in first. I have the big red ones. At least that's the variety it says on the tag.

Re: Those with tomato plants

I think I have to prune back my plants..too many branches. I have a few and they are all green, but I think I should have more.

my dad grows veggies every summer. The tomatoes always take the longest. They’re already eating some cucumbers and green beans, all the tomatoes are still green. Another few weeks and they should be ripe & YUMMY!!!!!!!

Re: Those with tomato plants

Just dont prune too much at one time cause the plant will go into shock and it can cause blossom end rot. which means that any fruit that does grow will be bad.

i have 4 roma plants, 4 big boys and 4 peppers.

the romas are doing rather well, lots of fruit but all are not ripe yet.
the bigboys have a few but are small and hopefully no where near being ripe
and the peppers just cant hold on to their buds. i have no peppers yet this years

Seriously! What's the deal with peppers down here?! I used to live upstate and had a HUGE garden... Peppers were all over the place. Since moving down here any time I try and grow peppers I get absolutely nothing. I get tall, skinny, ugly plants with buds that drop?!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Those with tomato plants

I have 2 plants which I bought around Mother's Day.. I have already taken off about 10 red tomatoes.. they were very good :) I still have plenty roughly 20 on both plants that are green, I saw 1 or 2 slowly turning red the other day.

I don't know if it depends on the amount of sunlight or the dirt but my mom bought them the same time with me ( I bought dirt and mine are in full sunlight, my mom's are in semi light and she used the dirt from her property) and her's are shorter in height and last I spoke about the plants weeks ago she still didn't have any red ones.

I think I have big boys or something like that. I have two that are big but not red yet and one just getting there. I have yellow and red pepper plants and an ancho chili pepper plant with nothing. I also have two eggplants with nothing yet.

My tomato plants are bigger than me but very little fruit. It's in most sunlight.

Re: Those with tomato plants

My smaller cherry tomatoes are growing like crazy and are just starting to turn red. The big tomatoes are slower - I have a few large ones and some smaller ones. It may be getting late in the season, but try some Miracle Grow. Sounds like your plants put effort into leaves and not flowering and fruit.

Re: Those with tomato plants

my cucs are growing huge, my peppers look like I may be getting 4 or 5 that will be edible maybe in a few weeks, and my tomatoes are also still green. This is the third year in a row that I planted tomatoes in the same place and for the past two years I had lots of tomatoes, should I have rotated the plants and not plant them in the same place? Does anyone grow carrots? How do you know if you they are growing ok?

You should definitely rotate the plants...your tomatoes, especially, can get fungus from being planted in the same soil(plus the soil gets depleted of nutrients)

Re: Those with tomato plants

I just got a flower for my beefsteak! Chat Icon I can't believe all of you have fruit already. I did start 2 weeks late. FUll sun and everything

My jalepeno peppers are great and my cucumbers are just about pickable (how long should they get? I'm waiting for them to be mostly green - right?)

My eggplant is budding and flowering - but I know that has a later gestation time

Yes, lots of leaves and branches only a few tomatoes. I want to prune them back some but as another poster commented, I don't want to shock them. At least there's some fruit coming in, I would worry if there's none. I will put down some new potting soil that has miracle grow in it. It seemed to make the plants grow really tall so maybe with all the rain and sun it needs some fresh nutrients.
