thoughts? Censoring posts on a message board
Just wanted to throw this out there and see what everyone thought and if I was off base with my feelings...
So I am on this other message board as part of a Meetup.com moms group. There was a post started about a month ago regarding McCain/Palin and how did everyone feel about the possibility of a woman VP. It morphed (as we have seen LOL) into the longest post ever on that board and basic and back and forth about both parties. However it stayed quite respectful IMHO even while some posters were passionate about their parties. Honestly the most interesting post so far on that board!
OK - Today there is a pinned post from the Admn of the group saying they will not be entertaining anymore "political" posts, whether it be about election results, venting/celebrating that your candidate did or didn't win, etc.
I'm sorry but isn't this censorship????
I get that they make the rules for their board, but seriously just because we are mothers does not mean we want to talk about leaky diapers all day!
ETA: mind you there are no other limits on what can be posted or discussed AT ALL - this is the first item that is now, off limits.

My DH is a part of a local mustang forum and they do not allow ANY political posts at all. I think it's quite ridiculous actually.

Re: thoughts? Censoring posts on a message board
It would bother me a little, but it is their message board and they pay for it as do the sponsors. If someone were to get upset b/c of a political post and that person were to leave, then sponsors would be upset.
I am on another message board (a music one) which is much more liberal, but they have a rule that you can't have political anything in your sig or avatar, but you can talk freely and use certain words.
IMO, it is their message board and they pay.

Their board, their rules. They have a certain audience they are aiming for, and they are allowed to censor topics/discussions/users that do not fall in line with that ideal.
That's why there are millions of groups around the world to join.

The first amendment and the concept of freedom of speech is only guaranteed to you by the government, not by anyone else, and even that has constraints. That said, I find selective censoring by admins unplatable personally sometimes, even though it's their right....

actually the members pay to join - not much $10 a year.
In fact it is temporarily a one time fee because we have enough in the "kitty" to sustain us for a few more years.

Re: thoughts? Censoring posts on a message board
I don't think it's censorship - the owners of the boards have the right to determine what content is permitted on their board.
I participate on a message board like that - the owners want their boards to be a positive experience for everyone. On the rare occasion a thread starts to really pull in a direction, the owners pull it. We know the rules and for the most part people abide by them. Sure, it's a little kumbaya sometimes but it's not the only place on the web to chat.

You pay? Well I guess that is a little different, but when you paid, did you agree to certain terms?

I don't see it as censorship in that its THEIR board and if you join--you are subject to THEIR terms and rules. Even if you pay for the board...when you join you agree to abide by their rules and they are the moderators and can decide what can and can not be posted.

There were no terms regarding the message board until now, you were free to post anything whether it be about your kid, if anyone knows a good plumber in the area, what preschool is recommended, thoughts/commentary on things you heard in the news, etc you get the idea.

Re: thoughts? Censoring posts on a message board
this board is uber censored in many ways.
I think it's odd that they've chosen that topic to sensor...but it's their perogative.
I am not a fan of being beholden to the most sensitive (as we are on this board) but what can you do?

Re: thoughts? Censoring posts on a message board
I feel like its their boards, their rules.
Somehow they came to that decision. Maybe some posters took comments to heart or took it for more then just a comment. Just b/c you think the comments were friendly and peaceful doesn't mean other posters saw it that way. (we all know from these boards that that happens a lot) Also, maybe they saw how "it could" have gotten out of hand, and they are trying to avoid an issue in the future.
IMO you should be able to talk about that stuff since it is a HUGE deal to so many. But I wouldn't be at all mad, since it is their boards.

Totally their boards. If one doesnt like it of course they can go to another site. I dont think its restrictive at all. There are things on every site that you can and cant do. I actually find this site pretty liberal on most things.

Re: thoughts? Censoring posts on a message board
Is it censorship? Yes, by definition it is - even though it is their board to censor.
Do I agree with it? It depends on the context of the message. In the case of the Mustang website, the posts are supposed to be Mustang related. If McCain owns a Mustang, well by all means post away about it - otherwise stick to the topic at hand.
