Re: Thoughts on gift received.... (Eta more info)
What's the point in analyzing someone's financial situation.
Say thank you and move on. Gifts are not mandatory, I never understand why people get all worked up about what people spend on them.

And... if her kids really loved those books (and it is the thought that counts: she packaged them up & paid for shipping)... it's also nice.
Absolutely! I agree

Le sigh. How did I know someone would say something like this?
I only mentioned it because someone asked in a previous post. As mentioned in original post - I am grateful. And definitely did not "get all worked up" about it. And thank you for giving me permission to "move on." Didn't realize I was stagnant or stuck.
Just wanted to see if that was an unusual thing to do for a bday gift. New to this whole mom/aunt thing (I was an only child growing up), so I don't know what is normal.

It's better than nothing, but I would find it odd and my DH and I would definitely discuss it.

It's weird and I would find it strange. I wouldn't give that as my only gift.

Thoughts on gift received.... (Eta more info)
I find it strange and a bit insulting if given as a gift as well. I welcome hand me downs but not as a gift. Sorry not a fan at all of this and I don't do it myself.

I think it is strange and unusual!! It's a shame people can't ask a question without being attacked!

There may be a more significant sentimental value to passing along these books. Unless you were managing their finances you wouldn't know if they were having troubles. I wouldn't be annoyed.

Hand me downs are fine, but I think it's super weird to give them as a gift. Maybe these books had sentimental value, but that doesn't seem like the case here. As a PP said, you can find toys for 5-10 bucks. With the money she spent on shipping, she could have gotten something new.
I totally get that you are not unappreciative, just a little confused. It would have just been better for her to send a nice card IMO.

I would find that weird. If they were books her kids LOVED, I would think she would include a little note saying that. I love buying my kids' favorite books as presents, but I buy new copies!
That being said, about 1/2 of my DH's family got my kids' nothing for their birthday, so at least your SIL remembered the birthday and put in the effort to wrap and mail the presents!

Questioning or commenting on a gift comes off as ungrateful. Who cares if it's unusual?
