Thoughts on painting a wood floor black....with pic of room and floor.
So as you can see our ugly dining room floor. It has a lighter colored wood with dark dots. I saw a great black painted floor, now keep in mind the fireplace will be painted white and the walls will be a neutral colored. The curtains will be a light blue. I wanna see what the masses say. Also included is the pic I saw of a HWF painted Black. Image Attachment(s):

I like the floor as is. Have you considered just painting the walls a color that brings out the positives in the floor?
Also, if you plan to ever re-sell the house, IMO painting the floor would be a turn off to potential buyers (or at least to me).
HOWEVER (which I am sure doesn't help), the painted floor is quite gorgeous!

Re: Thoughts on painting a wood floor black....with pic of room and floor.
what about sanding and staining the floor darker? I actually like the floor as is but a darker stain may look nicer with the spots
I wouldn't paint it. I know people who did this a lot in the 70's/80's only to have to pay a small fortune to strip them or carpet over them.

Okay more detail, the floor has some larger pet urine stains. As of now we have other things higher up on the list, but eventually we will be replacing the floor in this room. We will not be reselling, this is our forever home! So I guess I should include it's a temporary fix.

I like the idea. How would you keep it from scratching?

The painted floors I've seen are hard to keep up with. With dining room chairs moving back & forth they will get chipped. Is it possible to sand them down really well & stain them a walnut color?

I wouldn't do it. You will see every single speck of dust with black and I'd be worried about chipping/scratching with paint on a floor. I would just get a nice big area rug for now to cover the stains until you can put in new floors.

I agree with this. I think you are better off getting an area rug to cover the stains.

I have a 18month old and a 4 year old. I didn't think about chipping or scratches !!!! I will have to look more into it. As for staining, I cannot stain it, because they have these smaller dots that are darker stained, and they will continue to get darker with different stains. So maybe I will just wait it out and get a dark colored rug in hopes of hiding any stains.

I have a rug under our table with 2 very messy kids. During meals, I just through an old table cloth under their chairs. After they eat, I just shake it out into the sink.

In theory I like the idea but one of the contestants on Design Star did this (well, painted - it was whitewash, not black, but same idea) and before they even revealed the room the paint was scratched and coming up.
I agree with the PP who said add a rug. Don't spend a lot and make it patterned / darker and you won't see the food stains.

I agree!
Or just have the floor sanded and stained darker... it should only be a few hundred dollars.

Re: Thoughts on painting a wood floor black....with pic of room and floor.
I vote for getting it sanded and stained a darker color. the paint is going to scratch and chip, staining it will be more durable and probably have a more pleasing look.
On a side note, I'd also vote for not painting your brick fireplace. I don't like the look and feel that brick can be nice even if you're nto going completely traditional. I'd consider scrubbing the brick and motor joints and adding a dark wood mantle possibly just a thick board if you want it more contemporary.
the other option, is covering the brick in stone which is a nice look as well.

Agreed, plus the black would make the room look very small IMO. My DH installs/repairs wood floors and it's actually a pretty easy fix to fix urine stains. Even just sanding and refinishing makes a huge difference.

I would also think about what you have to do to prep the floor to paint. You might have to sand the poly off before you paint so the paint adheres correctly.
And if you are going to sand you might as well just re-stain at that point. A good floor person can help you so the dark spots don;t just get darker.

I would not paint it. I would have it sanded and stained a dark color.

Agreed! The floor gets alot of wear and tear and you're going to have to retouch every so often since paint will not adhere as well as stain...

Definitely don't paint it.
Sand it and stain it as dark as you can.

Re: Thoughts on painting a wood floor black....with pic of room and floor.
If you paint it, you have to put polyeurethene over it, like you would a stained floor. Not sure if this approach saves you much from sanding, staining & poyleruethaning, but if you prefer the look & it is only temporary anyway, I don't see why you couldn't do it.
