Re: Thoughts on Sea World/ Zoo's

I am not a fan of zoos at all and tend to avoid them. I am not a huge animal lover and haven't had a pet in decades, but something about seeing animals that are not native to my area caged in a zoo really saddens me.

I dont like most zoos but will go to certain ones that are known to rehabilitate the animals and keep them in huge enclosers.

Some zoos are very careful about animal habitats and have done great work for conservation (the Cincinnati Zoo is a fine example) but others are poorly managed and planned. For example, I once saw (in a small zoo) a lynx kept in a pen that was obviously way, way too small. The poor animals was obsessively pacing back and forth. Broke my heart.

Re: Thoughts on Sea World/ Zoo's

I personally hate Sea World because I'm terrified of fish and whales and sharks and stuff. But I digress...

I feel worse about circus animals than I do about zoos.

Zoo animals are taken care of. And alot of them were born in captavity. I don't mind them at all.

Re: Thoughts on Sea World/ Zoo's

I think that sometimes it's good because they keep certain species going for longer due to the environment and other circumstances. In other cases-- it may just be unnatural although I believe they do a pretty good job preserving their environments.

As far as my enjoyment of sea world or zoo's-- I hate them... BORING. ETA and I hate fish-- esp. sharks. Chat Icon

I think that in reputable places they have it better than if they lived in the wild. I just think that it is better to have my food served to me each day rather than have to go out and hunt for it and have to watch my butt that I don't get eaten myself!

I'll agree to this. I also think that even though it is messing with the natural order of things, that a lot of "good zoos" are helping to keep certain species from extinction by breeding them in captivity.

Great Question Deb!

I also want to add that by keeping the animals in captivity though, you are messing with their natural instincts, which, IMO is not great. Instincts are passed down through "pack learning" and through genetics. Just like you can breed out a bad quality through selective breeding in dogs & cats, you can do the same over time in any animal. To me there is a potential of playing god a little, which I do not always agree with for a wild animal.

Re: Thoughts on Sea World/ Zoo's

I feel sad about it.

I think the ones who perform may not be altogether happy. It interests me when I hear stories about whales pulling down their trainers into the water, or elephants attempting to run away.

Makes me think they are intelligent and not interested in doing the things they are forced to do.

I like them when they are done correctly.

When they are clean, and the animals are cared for properly zoos and aquariums have great portential for opening peoples eyes to animal/environmental conservation. Especially when it starts with kids.

But I've seen my share of crappy zoos/aquariums and they are definitely a sad sight.

Re: Thoughts on Sea World/ Zoo's

I always liked zoo's. Then I went on a safari and see how the animals really live... and zoos are really not a great representation of the 'wild'.
Some zoo's/aquariums do better than others, but it is still not the same.

I like that many places rehabilitate and/or breed endangered animals, keeping the species alive, but I cannot help but see how unnatural these habitats are.

I always think about the Central Park Polar Bear that swam in a constant pattern because he was so bored. It's awful for the animals not to be able to hunt for food, move about freely, etc ... they have needs, basic animal instinct needs and a zoo will just never cover them all.

Re: Thoughts on Sea World/ Zoo's

I think the San Diego zoo is very tasteful, the animals there treated very well and have a large space to live in. I have not been to Sea World in a decade so I cannot comment on them.

This is the part of zoo life that bothers me. Just because an animal is kept in captivity does not mean its instinctual needs are being fulfilled.

Agreed
Some animals are also endangered and zoos give them life

Zoos bother me a little but but I absolutely love sea world. There are so many things there that you would never be able to see and it seems like the animals are well cared for.

Re: Thoughts on Sea World/ Zoo's

I love zoos and aquariums

It think that they take great care in making sure the animals are cared for in a good enviroment and it give us a chance to see animals that we would never be able to see.

I do not like the circus or anyplace where animals have to perform.
