Thoughts on the safety of leaving your dog in a hotel room (pets allowed of course) ?

Would you feel comfortable leaving your beloved pet in a pet allowed hotel room? We may have to travel out of town for a few days, driving not flying. Any thoughts on this? Experiences, etc, appreciated.

As long as it's a pet friendly hotel, I see no problem with it.
We went to New Hope last summer and stayed at a pet-friendly B & B. When we went out to dinner we left Misty in the room. Then we went back and got her and took her out walking and to one of the open air bars.

I don't think someone would watch you and then wait and sneak into your room to steal your dog. Most dogs are stolen from obvious places like yards, tied to poles outside stores, etc. It would be neglect on the hotels part if someone were able to get into your room. Most of these large chains rekey the door everytime it's used

Good luck and enjoy travelling with your pups!

We took our dog with us on our last trip and she was fine in the hotel room. We only left her a couple hours at a time, and just put the "Do Not Disturb" sign up. We had no problems at all.

ITA. I go to cat shows and when the cats are in the room we leave the 'do not disturb' sign up.

While the cat was in the show hall I ran back to the room for something and the maid was in there cleaning. There were probably 100 cats in the hotel that weekend because it was the biggest show of the year so you would think they would have alerted the staff about it. Well, the maid was there with the door wide open and when she saw me she gasped and was like "Oh, did I let the kitties out??" Ummm... a little late for that...

we left our 4 in a hotel room last week. they were fine.
they give you little things to put on their leashes that have the hotel info on it just in case of emergency

also, they give you a "pets in room" thing to put on the door so that the maids do not enter

i would think it would be fine... if a hotel is "pet friendly" then they are used to dealing with pets in the room. just keep your "do not disturb" sign up when you aren't there, so the maids don't go in and out, and i'm sure it will be fine!
we are going to a B&B next month and they have a pet friendly section; i wanted to bring our guy so bad... but dh doesn't want to bring him Chat Icon

I'd be okay with it, except I would worry b/c my dog would bark more in a strange place he would create a disturbance.

I have thought of this and it concerns me! Mine do bark when bored, etc.

But that is why i would never leave them alone for more than an hour or two, only when absolutely necessary and during the day when I would think most guests would be out and about and hopefully not be disturbed.

But we don't even plan to eat out so as to limit the time that our dogs would have to be alone in the room.

Thanks for the reassurance and stories, everyone!

ITA with the above posters. If you want extra reassurance though, maybe try to find a hotel that is not only pet friendly, but one that sponsors or holds Dog/Cat shows. IMO, if they can handle 3000 animals at once your few should be no problemChat Icon

Have a good trip!

I never traveled with our dogs, but want to start. I just thought of bringing their crate with them. This way if anyone does open the door they are in their crate, also, they wont be left alone in a place that they do not know.

I thought of the same thing. I also plan to bring my huge collapsible gate to block the door in case anyone accidentally enters.

We took ours with us for the first time to Cambridge with us when we went a few months ago and were wondering how she would react...she's not used to a multi-dwelling building with lots of floors and doors and people milling about...

She was totally fine over the course of three days...the first time we left her was only for three minutes while we stood outside waiting for her to bark and then came back in with treats...she was great after that.

When we would come into the room she'd be on the bed and barking at us as we walked through the door..plus she loved running to the hotel room from the elevator.

Overnight was fun..every time there was someone in the hallway or closing a door she started barking like a madman...

FYI, a great chain for pet-friendly hotels is:

Kimpton Hotels

At this chain, they always offer to watch your dog and play with it at the lobby area in case they are too rowdy or sad without you..
