throw out those OPK's!
That's what my Dr. told me and my DH today! He told me that they are useless and to see him in 3 months if I'm not preggo by then. I'm off to being a responsible charter now. I have to learn to get up and do it right away.
Anyway- he ordered some other tests for us in the mean time to get the ball rolling.
Here's baby dust to all of you!

Yep! I told him that they are telling me I am Oing on CD 18 or 19 with a 28/29 day cycle! He said that no matter how long your cycle is, you ALWAYS get AF 14 days ofter Oing! So, if I O on CD 18 - and get AF on CD 28, that means that it was only 10 days from Oing to AF and not the 14. He says it's 14 for everyone- from O day to AF day. He said that from CD 1 to OD for everyone is not the same- just OD to AF day.
So, those OPK's are a waste of money if they dont' register you Oing 14 days before AF is due.
I'm beginning to chart and test out predicting on my own when I O.
Good luck and baby dust!

That is not 100% true though . Not in ALL people. My blood work last month showed by my progestrone that I DEFINATLY 100% ovulated around day 12-15 at the latest. AF came on day 33 . Even if was say day 15..I didnt get af for 18 more days.
What I think the Dr. is saying is that everyone usually has the same LP ( luteal period/phase) , and is never usually off more then a day or two, but it can be off. AND in my situation it was off a lot, which could signal an infection my dr. says.
So..your Dr's advice is relatively true, but its not 14 days for everyone. ( the LP he is talking about).
The opks tell you when your body surges the hormone to release an egg, the only time they arent correct is when you dont ovulate at ALL, you will see a surge but no egg is released....so IMO they still can be accurate for people, unless their issue is not ovulating at all.
ON A POSITIVE NOTE. CONGRATS on your dr's appointment going well!!! on a more positive note Im glad your

Re: throw out those OPK's!
LoraI have to disagree. The LP varies for many women. SOme women have a very short LP - some have a 14 day LP...some longer. I would do some research....it just doesnt seem right for him to say that.

Re: throw out those OPK's!
OMG, your doctor is wrong! Not everyone's LP is 14 days! I am hoping what Donna said s what he meant
"What I think the Dr. is saying is that everyone usually has the same LP ( luteal period/phase) , and is never usually off more then a day or two, but it can be off. "
I love my opk's ESPECIALLY when I use them in CONJUNCTION to charting...when everything points to the same ovulation date it makes me feel like its truly accurate. In my opinion, I would recommend continued use of OPK's until you get a bit more comfortable and learn your cycle.
PS I am a little ticked off at your doctor.

Re: throw out those OPK's!
Lora, Have you been going to this doctor long? Maybe consider changing doctors?
I'm sorry!! I didn't want to upset you but it just didn't seem right (what he said).

OH dont feel that way!!! I think dr's like to think the easiest way they can, and sometimes misinform. My friends Dr's had her taking CLomid and another RX on the WRONG days because he never asked her how long her cycle WAS!
I would start charting though, its the BEST way for you to help yourself figure it out.
KEep your chin up! It will get easier!

Re: throw out those OPK's!
HOLY MOLEY...... I have nothing to say, except FIND A NEW DOCTOR !!!!!!
This infuriates me.....he couldn't be more wrong ....!!!! geez !
Let me guess this doctor is an ob/gyn ? Like I have always said,....ob/gyns, have very little understanding of fertility. The same way Denny's has very little understanding about making pasta. You want good pasta, you go to an authentic Italian Restaurant not a diner. Go to the specialists.....doctors can waste your time and make you feel "horrible".
Oh and btw, if you ovulate on day 18, and your cycle is 28 days....that means your LP is 10, and short...therefore, your corpus luteum, may be shedding too early,....and not putting out the amount of progesterone needed. My advice to you, is to get your progesterone level checked, 8 days past your LH surge.......USING THE OPK!

Re: throw out those OPK's!
Lora, is it possible you misunderstood what he said? I'd call him for clarification bc it does not sound correct. My doctor told me that charting along with OPKs are the best way to go. Either way, it's great that he's moving forward with testing. Did you tell him you were trying for a year? GL, and baby dust to you!

Re: throw out those OPK's!
Wow!! Not much I can add to that, except your Dr. is soo wrong. I brought my charts in to my Dr. and they showed my LP being 18 to 19 days each month. Everyone is different and you may really want to go for a second opinion...start charting yourself in the meanwhile, it will give you a definite idea as to what is going on. Good luck and God Bless!

Re: throw out those OPK's!
WOW!!!....not only is your doc VERY wrong....but if what you are saying is true and your luteal phase is only 10 days long - you may have a possible "luteal phase defect" which means that your lining sheds too soon and does not give your egg enough time to implant. don't worry, this can be easily solved with medicine and your doc should have picked that up right away.
please get a second opinion.....
update: ooops, i did not realize that redstar already explained it - much better than me i might add....

Re: throw out those OPK's!
My DR. told me they are the greatest invention for TTcers ever!! Although I got PG without it, I will do both: BD on days 9, 11 and 13, AND use the test also.
I can't chart because I always get up in the middle of the night/early morning to pee and I'm half asleep so it screws it all up for me.
I got PG using the 9 - 11 - 13 method....
