Thursday Gossip
John Travolta may live to regret squeezing into the house-dress of Edna Turnblad.
Gay critics are hissing at Travolta for inserting himself into the remake of 'Hairspray' because they charge that his faith, Scientology, is homophobic.
'It's well-known that Scientology has operated reparative therapy clinics to try to 'cure' gays,' says Washington Blade editor Kevin Naff, who is calling for a boycott of the movie, which opens next month.
'Scientologists are required to donate a hefty portion of their income to the church,' Naff tells us. 'So, by going to this movie, gay people are literally putting money into an organization that seeks to 'cure' them.'
Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote in his 1950 best seller, 'Dianetics,' that gays were 'sexual perverts' and 'very ill physically.' In a federal lawsuit filed in 1998, ex-Scientologist Michael Pattinson claimed the church deceived him by using Travolta as an example of a satisfied member who'd gone straight. Reps for Travolta — who has been married to Scientologist Kelly Preston for 13 years — and the church have called Pattinson's charges 'meritless' and 'hogwash.'
Travolta's rep didn't respond to our e-mail yesterday. But John Carmichael, president of the New York branch of the Church of Scientology, told us, 'Scientology doesn't try to tell people what their sexual orientation should be. The emphasis is on helping people survive better in the world. If a person comes into Scientology and they are involved in doing anything that they consider detrimental to their survival, then they can change that compulsion.'
Naff considers the notion of remaking John Waters ' 1988 camp classic 'ridiculous. The role of Edna Turnblad was played brilliantly by Divine. I'm a huge John Waters fan, but shame on him for signing on to the casting of this film.'
The openly gay Waters wasn't available for comment yesterday, but we're sure he'll have some thoughts.

Tuesday was a bad night for under-age party hoppers. Rihanna, 19, Cassie, 20, and Teyana Taylor, who turned 16 on MTV's last season of 'My Super Sweet 16,' were denied entrance at Fabolous ' album party at Runway when reps for event host Level Vodka enforced 'Lohan's Law,' checking IDs.

Marvel comics legend Stan Lee is developing an animated series for MTV starring Paris Hilton, his office confirmed to Gatecrasher.
A separate source directly involved with the project likened it to the 'Stripperella' cartoon developed by Lee in 2003 for Pamela Anderson.
The insider said the deal had been inked and would include a credit for former Hilton boyfriend Paris Latsis, who was also on board.
'He's not doing much, but she wanted him involved,' says the snitch.
A start date has not yet been decided for the series.
Meanwhile, a Hilton pal tells us the wayward heiress has dropped around 5 pounds from her already slender frame as a result of her incarceration at the Twin Towers Medical Center in Los Angeles.
'She's crying, but less,' says the friend. 'She's still depressed and not eating or sleeping much.'

Brit songbird Lily Allen was a hot mess Tuesday night at Roseland Ballroom for her only New York City concert date.
Smoking and chugging shots onstage, the rambling singer kicked off her sneakers, stumbled over her gown and forgot the lyrics to her own songs.
'See, I told you I was going to mess up,' she told the crowd, who were already unhappy because she was two hours late to the stage.
In between fits of giggling, Allen found time to mock an ex's boyfriend's 'size' and even dedicated her song 'Everything Is Wonderful' to 'the rich ***----- who live in Washington, D.C., and up our taxes.'
Allen canceled all but four of her 21 announced U.S. concert dates, citing exhaustion. But she wasn't too exhausted to carry on partying after the show at the Beatrice Inn, where she ran into Josh Hartnett.
According to two witnesses, the actor was even gallant enough to escort Miss Allen inside the bathroom. What a gent!

THE author of "The Starter Wife" is getting a fresh start now that she and her starter husband have split.
Novelist Gigi Levangie-Grazer and movie producer Brian Grazer are pulling the plug just three months shy of their 10th wedding anniversary.
A rep for the couple said, "They remain good friends. This decision was both mutual and amicable, and they plan to share custody of their two children."
Rumors of the split surfaced two weeks ago just as Gigi's new "Starter Wife" debuted on USA. The show stars Debra Messing as a spouse whose powerful studio head husband leaves her for a younger woman, but he eventually begs for a reconciliation.
The heavily promoted miniseries had some in Hollywood wondering if the Grazers' breakup could be a case of life imitating art - but we're assured there are no third parties involved.
Just as "Starter Wife" was hitting the air, Gigi, a statuesque redhead, called Donald Trump to bow out of her plans to write the script for his new scripted drama, "Trump Tower," because of "her impending divorce," an insider added.
At the same time, Brian announced to the press he was selling the couple's Pacific Palisades home for a whopping $27.5 million and was mulling a move to New York.
The couple split once before - two years ago they separated for six months before reuniting. Friends are hoping they will get back together again.
"They have been together for a total of 16 years," a pal said. "No one can say they didn't give it their best shot." If they do follow through with a divorce, friends said there will be no hard feelings - they have an iron-clad prenup agreement and both are successful and "make their own money."
Spiky-haired Brian - who produced "The Da Vinci Code" and won an Oscar for "A Beautiful Mind" - just finished making "American Gangster" with Russell Crowe and has started pre-production on the film of "Frost/Nixon." Gigi is now penning "Queen Takes King" - about a power New York couple who split up.
