Thyroid gals - to synthroid or not?
So I've never had a thyroid prob but when I had bloodwork done when I first got pregnant, my TSH was a little elevated (6.5 I believe) so Hanauer sent me to an endocronologist. By the time I saw him, a week later, my bloodwork was slightly elevated, but not as bad as the first time (2.6) and if i wasn't pregnant wouldn't even be an issue. He started me on 50mcg of synthroid. Now, I lost the baby (stopped developing at 6w4d or so) and miscarried 2 wks ago at 9wks (naturally).
Now, I finally got in touch with the endo b/c i wanted to get some bloodwork done now to compare. He went on and on about me stopping the synthroid and having bloodwork done in 3 months or so. After he finally stopped speaking long enough to listen, I said, "but what if I'm pregnant again by then?". He says, "oh, you didn't have a D&C?" NO, but if that factors, shouldn't you ASK! I said to him, "I was thinking I should stay on it, have my bloodwork done soon - this wk or next". He then says, "oh, yeah, right, that sounds like what you should do".
W T F - Who is the doctor? Now I don't know what to do. Any insight?

Re: Thyroid gals - to synthroid or not?
In my experience, endocrinologists tend to know just as little about this as the rest of us (kinda scary). I've been hypothyroid for about 8 years, and my levels STILL aren't stabilized.
My only suggestion would be to go to a RE...they might be a little more well-versed as to stabilizing your levels to become/stay pregnant. Sorry if that doesn't help much, I find the whole thing frustrating, too!

I would find a new Dr-maybe even an RE as the OP said. In pregnancy Dr's like to see thyroid levels below 2 so even 2.6 is a little high. In my research about m/c I have read that an uncontrolled thyroid issue can cause m/c. GL

This is why I thought it best to stay on the synthroid. To me, why would I risk not having a regulated thryroid if I plan to get pregnant again (or at least hope to). The elevated TSH has still not been explained. I have not had any bloodwork since I started the synthroid. He wants me to have some done next week b/c now will not be accurate since my hormones are all off (I am still getting a BFP).

Synthroid takes time to build up in your system. You can not take it for a week lets say and then they will check and see if you are accurate it has to build up.
You may not get an explaination as to why your TSH is elevated. When I was first diagnosised mine was 46! I had just had blood work done 3 months earlier and also had a thyroid screen and all was in level but I quickly went to 46.
It can just malfunction that quickly.
IMO I would stay on the synthroid. You should be seeing your endo or RE every 4-6 weeks when you become PG.
Who was the endo that you saw- FM me if you want. I have 2 endos that I have seen in my life and I love them one is in Nassau and one in Suffolk. I can give you their info too if you want to switch.

Does anyone know any endocrinologists in Nassau county that you recommend for hypothyroid treatment (for my husband). Thank you!

I wouldn't recommend the guy I went to (he did nothing but confuse me and asks me MY opinion on my treatment plan )
