Thyroid Problems and TTC anyone?
Ok, I am getting a little nervous (maybe paranoid) about TTC while having underactive thyroid issues. I do not feel my thyroid is under control and have been doing a little research on the subject. I have heard from a friend that Synthroid is dangerous and may cause autism in newborns, miscarriage and other things. I was thinking to switch to Armour instead. My bloodwork says I am in "normal" range, but I don't feel my best, and am worried about getting pregnant in this condition.
Anyone have any advice, suggestions, or just kind words?
Thanks,
Gina

I too have an underactive thyroid and I take Synthroid. I never heard it causing autism or defects. In fact my RE said that when I do get pregnant I will have to increase the dose of Synthroid.

same here..Im currently on Snythroid and it will be raised when Im PG and PG creates an evenlower thyroid function and thyroid functions helps develop a babys brain.
I have never heard of any negative reports on synthroid..its just giving your body back what it cannot normally produce on its own.

I have hypothyroidism and my dr. said that if you're not on synthroid or some other form of it and your thyroid is slow, that can cause mental retardation.

That is exactly what I have read! But, I have never been told that there is a correlation with Synthroid/autism. And I was also told that once I am pg, the dosage will be increased.
Your friend, with good intentions, is obviously confused.

Re: Thyroid Problems and TTC anyone?
I have an underactive thyroid and my daugher is 1 year old. My levels maintained with I was PG and they didn't have to change my Med. I was on 112mcg. Afterwards was another story. I have never heard that and nor does my daughter have any of those problems. My endo never mentioned it to me. She did mention to me the serious consequences of not medicating your thyroid when your level are off.
Where did you get your information?? I am curious?

My friend had gone to a doctor last week and he changed her to Armour instead of Synthroid because she wasn't so responsive to Synthroid and wanted to be on something less synthetic. I guess she could be mistaken about the autism....
I know that you have to likely increase dosage during PG, I was just wondering if anyone had changed to Armour because of lack of progress with Synthroid. I seem to have hit a wall and want to be perfectly well before TTC.

Re: Thyroid Problems and TTC anyone?
If it is your T4 that is causing your idione level problems and not your T3 then yes, chances are you would be less responsive to Synthroid then most. Most people with underactive thyroids have problems with their T3 and not their T4 as it was explained to me. But if you are one that does have problems with your T4 then like I said Synthroid is probably not the drug for you.
Are your levels not under control? Have you been seeing an Endo? If you are seeing an Endo I am sure that he/she has tested to see if you are T3 or T4.
I can't speak for others but I can honestly say in the 4-5 years that I have had my thyroid condition, and even though my levels are uncontrol I have never felt the same since the day it hit. As my doctor said you may never get back to 100%

Well, in all honesty, I find that unnacceptable. I have been to 4 different doctors, and only 1 of them has actually taken into consideration how I actually felt, and not just my bloodwork. I am actually going beck to him next week (he didn't take my new insurance so now I pay cash for a reduced fee, hopefully). I have no idea if I am T3 or T4, no one ever told me, but there needs to be some relief from this fog, irritability, and lack of concentration! It's just sad that many doctors aren't interested i trying new things, just prescribing meds.

Are you going to an endocrinologist or Obgyn, family doctor? I would definitely check with an endocrinologist or reproductive endocrinologist for TTC. Good Luck! I know how frustrating this can all be!

Re: Thyroid Problems and TTC anyone?
Getting a full thyroid panel done is critical. Make sure you see an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid issues. Too many doctors overlook different areas to test. Also ask your endocrinologist if your thyroid issue/disease, is autoimmune. There are two types...Hashimoto's for hypothyroidism and Graves for hyperthyroidism.
TSH-November 2002, the national academy of clinical biochemistry revised the lab guidelines for the diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid disease. Some doctors still go by the 'former' guidelines. In 2003, the AACE (american association of clinical endocrinologists) encourages doctors to consdier treatement for patients who have a tsh outside of .3-3.0.
When ttc, your tsh should be ideally between a 1-2.
Total T4- These levels can be artificially high during pregnancy or while on bcps...because of the estrogen.
Free T4 (more accurate test that Total T4)
Total T3
Free T3
Thyroglobin/thyroid binding globulin /TBG
T3 Resin Uptatke
AND DEFINITELY GET AN ANTIBODIES TEST !!! This is very important when ttc, because the antibodies can have an affect on implantation and miscarriage.
Other blood tests that can point to but aren't diagnostic ...of thyroid issues are....
abnormal cholesterol abnormal triglycerides abnormal iron or ferritin serum calcium alkaline phosphate sex hormones-binding globin levels blood sugar/poor glucose tolerance hemoglobin bilirubin
