tie dye tips for a birthday party

I'd like to have my son's friends tie dye a shirt at this b-day party. However, this is something I have never done. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations on the best way to do this with 4 and 5 year olds?
TIA

I believe you use RIT dye. the tee shirts need to be washed first.

I believe you rubber band the sections and you can even put objects (like a rock) and then rubber band it to make a design (ummm...I remember this from the Grover clip on Sesame Street when they are in Jamaica and the kids are tie dyeing shirts!!!!Chat Icon ).

And I think you need to use HOT water....RIT dye is sold in Michael's I'm sure and in Walmart...read the box first!

Good Luck!

Re: tie dye tips for a birthday party

We tie dyed with my class last year (first graders) with a kit that we bought at AC Moore. You soak the shirts first in a fluid that helps the dye to stick better. Then do the whole rubber band thing --- and the kit comes with the dyes in squeeze bottles. You have to wash them afterwards.

They came out WAY better then any tie dye I had done before, the colors were really vibrant. and because we had squeeze bottles it was neater IMO.
