Tinted Car Windows...

...can you untint them?

My DH's car has tinted windows..(factory installed, we bought the car like that, off the lot)

He has gotten 2 tickets for tinted windows in the past year...Chat Icon

We never would have bought the car if we knew this was going to be an issue.

TIA

Re: Tinted Car Windows...

You can... I think really any auto glass place could do it.

It's BS that factory tint is too dark... I bet there's a class action suit floating around somewhere.

Re: Tinted Car Windows...

Factory installed tint should be legal. But yes, it can be removed. My Dad's friend has a glass place and he did it for DH. The only thing is if it's on the back window where the defrosters are, it's more of a pain because they have to avoid damage to the defrosters.

In NY, State law says you can have any tint you want on the back window (even cardboard), as long as you have two side-view mirrors.

This allows panel trucks, vans without windows in the back, etc. to operate legally.

Re: Tinted Car Windows...

What percentage did the tint come up as when the cop ticketed him? I believe anything under 30 or 35% is illegal. If it was under that percentage I doubt it was factory tint. but yes tint can be removed ..you can do it your self, but having it done is cleaner and easier.

It was never said....

Both tickets were BS...

Ticket #1 Officer pulled DH over in the HOV lane. Had baby in the car. After going through the motions officer gave DH a ticket for the tinted windows...

Ticket #2 Was one of those stops where they are checking for seatbelts etc...got ticket for the windows..

When my DH told the cop that we would never have bought the car had we known it was an issue he said "sure you would have"...honestly NO we wouldnt have...

How can they ticket you if they didn't check the percentage..they ahve a little gun thing that goes overyour window and tells them the percentage of light coming through....i don't get how they can just ticket you by the look of it..how long ago did you get the ticket..if you have the tint removed you dont' have to pay the ticket, but I would find out the % and then fight the ticket if you're with in the legal range

Re: Tinted Car Windows...

I would fight it. Was the car bought used or new? If new and they are factory tints they can't be illegal. No car manufacturer would put illegal tints on a car.

If you bought used I think the previous owner had them put on after market and requesed them to be too dark.

Either way I would find out if they really illeal and if they are not I would fight it.
