Tipping Question-Movers

Okay, I was just saying tipping is out of hand in another post, but this is one area where I do feel people should be tipped if the do a good job.

How much would you tip movers? They are moving us out of a 2-bedroom co-op (one flight up) and into a house. We don't have much furniture and no large appliances, but we do have a lot of stuff--boxes and the like. They are only moving our things about 15 minutes from where we live now, so it's not a long trip.

Thanks in advance! This is my first time ever using movers. Over the years, I've moved a lot, but I always asked friends or family to help out. At this point though, I just can't deal with moving ourselves.

Re: Tipping Question-Movers

Its really tough to do this until you see them work.

This past move, I moved from a 2BR apt (with an elevator and loading dock) to a taalll, stair-filled townhouse about 45 minutes away. These guys were so good and meticulous, wrapping our couches and mattresses in plastic, carrying 3 heavy boxes at a time up three flights of stairs, etc. We tipped them $40 each (2 guys) which they were very happy with.

My previous move was a 1br to a studio in the building next door, took WAYYY too long because the guys were sooo lazy. I think I tipped them like $10 each.. they really shouldnt have gotten anything at all.

Re: Tipping Question-Movers

I think we tipped around $200 for the team (owner and two assistants).

Re: Tipping Question-Movers

I had 4 guys and gave them $20 each

they were happy

both buildings had evelators and loading docks- they didn't have to left anything heavy

I would have bought them lunch if they would have let me- but instead then took a 2 hour lunch break- when my new building had an in by 5pm rule- I was stressed

Thanks for the suggestions!

Yes, we will definitely base this upon merit. If they are good, they will get a bigger tip. If they aren't so good, very small tip. I don't even want to think about any other possibilities below that!

The move is set for Monday! I'm praying for no rain!
