Tipping standards around the world
Travel & Leisure tipping guide
I can't believe NY'ers pay double what the rest of the world does- and often MORE than that.

Re: Tipping standards around the world
Um yeah, that's wrong. In Sydney we don't tip. It is un-Australian if you DO tip. I've never tipped here and DH is Australian, we don't tip. Service people get a pretty good minimum wage ($14 and hour), no need to tip.
Maybe this is based on Americans tipping?
This article is inaccurate. AFAIK in London they don't tip either.

Thats right, we don't normally tip in the UK, however, a tip isn't frowned upon, however, it isn't expected.

Re: Tipping standards around the world
when i went to belgium -- service was included as well when we ate in restaurants. so you can add that country as a "no tipping" expected for waiters

When I went to S. Africa I actually had the waiters/waitresses running out of the restaurant to thank me for the tip! I was shocked!!

In Thailand there is no tipping culture but you should leave what ever coin change is left over on your table after you pay your bill. It's considered cheap to take every baht.

Re: Tipping standards around the world
most other cultures DON'T tip because their wait staff make more than ours. Most wait staff here make $3.00 an hour if they're lucky, so they really rely on the tips. In Europe for example, wait taff is paid at LEAST the minimum wage (which I know in Ireland is close to 8 Euro an hour...which now is like 11-12 dollars an hour) so they do't rely on the tips. sure i'm sure they're appreciated, but it's not expected.

I'm so glad you said this. I have traveled and met several other travelers from other countries who did not tip on our trip and it bothered me because some people didn't think about why the customs were different. In America tipping is an important part of the take-home pay for certain jobs.

Re: Tipping standards around the world
this reminds me of when i filled in for a friend at a chinese restaurant in the city. a couple (clearly tourists from outside the US) was heading out the door after finishing dimsum and this waiter chased after them. apparently they did not leave a tip. the couple didn't mean to and gave up the tip to the waiter immediately.
i felt kinda bad for the couple. they didn't know so no big deal. but the waiter.. i did think was very tacky of him. but they make WAY less than minimum wage. so they depend of tips to get them through the day. the rest is closed down now.. it was a deadbeat restaurant anyway. so good for them.
