tips for car shopping

Tomorrow I am taking my sister car shopping. She is unsure whether or not she wants to lease or finance. She has good credit makes decent money. Also if she goes to multiple dealerships should she withhold her ss# ?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Do it all over the phone... Call one dealer get a price then call another or better yet, say that you will pay $400 over the invoice price... Can you do it? If they say yes... Buy it...

highly, highly recommend the aaa program- we bought our car through there- they negotiate the prices for you- link

I think Costcos and BJS have similar programs

Re: tips for car shopping

1. Leasing, IMO, is not worth it if you intend to buy the vehicle out after the lease is up. Also, many companies are not leasing right now.

2. Go on Edmunds and get the invoice price for the vehicle she wants. I wouldn't pay over this. We just bought DH a car and paid well below invoice.

3. Consider a certified pre-owned vehicle. You can get a 2008 or maybe even a 2009 that someone couldn't make the payments on so it was repossessed for dirt cheap. Just check the carfax and get a vehicle inspection report.

4. DO NOT give anyone your social until you know you want to buy the vehicle and are ready to put in for the financing. Someone I know was going from dealer to dealer letting them run his credit and then he had trouble because it messed up his score.

5. Don't give them your credit card so they can show their manager that you're serious about the price you're asking for. This is just a way for them to make it harder for you walk out.

Oy, the list goes on. Car shopping is so annoying, but kind of fun at the same time. I love watching them try to play their sales games.

I agree with this. Also DO NOT negotiate on the monthly payment regardless of leasing or buying. Negotiate the best price for the car you like. Don't feel pressured to put a deposit down. If she has a trade in, don't tell them until you have negotiated the best offer, then hit them with it.

Good luck.
