TMI, but is anyone else as freaked out as me about...

the possibility of tearing during birth? Not even just tearing, but being cut. This is my absolute, biggest, hugest fear I have about labor. I am so scared about this that I lose sleep some nightsChat Icon I have been having major anxiety since Sunday because my poor SIL had a really BAD tear that her lovely husband proceeded to tell all the gorey details about. I'm so freaked out.

I'm worried about this too. Have you talked to your doctor about his episiotomy rate? I have been reading a lot about how the position you're in and how you push have a lot to do with if you tear. Supposedly laying flat on your back is the worst position and most likely to cause tearing.

wow, I didn't even think to ask my doctor about this. I just assumed if it were to happen, it will happen. My mother swears it's better to tear or be cut than to "stretch" yourself out too muchChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon But I am so sick to my stomach over this that I would almost rather them tell me I need a c section.Chat Icon

Go on Babycenter.com and do a search on episiotomies -- they have a lot of information. I am also totally freaked out about this -- and I'm only 7 weeks! I am seriously considering switching to a midwife, who does not do episiotomies, since many OBs still do them.

I know you're not really asking for advice (or experience) & this was just geared toward the Moms-To-Be, but I'll give you both because I'm a pita like that....

Have you tried perineal massage? I know that was supposed to help a lot.

I didn't do it. I had an epsiotomy with my first - but they numb you. I'm not sure if you would be able to feel it with an epi. Second time was a minor tear. I thought it was going to be a lot worse than it actually was having heard the horror stories.

don't worry...I was scared too. I tore (2nd degree I believe) and the Dr said it was such a clean tear, that it would have been the same had she cut me. I didn't feel a thing!

I will agree, its not so bad really. Your body goes through a lot of trauma while giving birth, that tearing and being stitched up is not such a big deal. I tore 2nd Degree also and was healed up in around 2 weeks...

Don't worry so much, you will have a lovely baby at the end of it all!

At the parenting class we took at the hospital, the nurse said they only cut in about 1% of v-births now. They usually just let the tear happen. She said it heals easier. I have no idea why.

I also was PETRIFIED of this as well as some other things. My friend had a v-birth and had to get cut and said it wasnt that bad at all.

Re: TMI, but is anyone else as freaked out as me about...

i asked the doctor not to cut me and he said they only cut if need be. becuase my daughter was 9lbs 13oz they need to cut me he told me i was cut only a little bit and my husband saw him do it. but when she came out she tore me even more. i did not feel a think since i got the epidural and they numbed me down there. and the recovery wasnt bad i only felt sore and didnt want to sit down but they give you percisets and good stuff to help with the recovery. my biggest fear was being cut but when you in labor and your pushing your like get this kid out of me already!

It is true that lying on your back is the most unnatural position to give birth in but if you have an epidural you don't have much choice since your legs are numb.

There are things you can do for the rest of your pregnancy and DH can help you but it can help you from tearing. Perineal massage.

Midwives will do perineal massage during delivery to help prevent tearing. They will use mineral oil as well.

I would definitely talk to your doctor about this. I had an 8lb baby with a 14 inch head and I had basically no tearing. She had to do a small stich and she even debated if it was necessary.

Also most ob/gyns won't deliver in another position other than horizontally since that's the way they've been trainined. My ob/gyn said it was one of the non-negotiable things for them to deliver.

I got an episiotomy and I tore internally and externally, I didn't feel any of it happening (thanks to the epidural) and I healed just fine...Just make sure you steal a few of those lovely squirt bottles from the hospital...they were a savior!

Re: TMI, but is anyone else as freaked out as me about...

After I spoke with my dr and through my childbirth ed classes, they reall do try their hardest not to cut you, so I have been told.

You def wont' feel it though, even if you don't get an epi, cause they will use a numbing agent. My dr also told me it's better to be cut than tear on your own, cause a cut is more controlled.

I am sure in the end, i would want to get that baby out and see soo badly I woouldn't care what in h#ll was going on down there!

Thank you all SO much for your input. I'm still freaking out over it, but I will absolutely ask my doctor at my next appt. I mean, the contractions, I'm not afraid of, i'm not afraid of actually having to raise her, I'm just PETRIFIED of this! Chat Icon

I am afraid of everything and have anxiety issues since I was a teenager, so everything about delivery is scary to me, but I will ask all the questions along the way. I am afraid of not getting to the hospital in time and them saying it is too late for an epidural. Chat Icon Chat Icon
