Thank you for all of the wonderful advice, suggestions, and opinions. I haven't even had my camera for 24 hours yet and I am loving it!!!! I ended up with the D40 and got the additional 55-200mm VR lens. And of course I got filters for the lenses. I am so excited. Thank you all for responding to my many posts!
Now, if the weather would just clear up, I would like to take some pictures outside!

 That sounds exactly like what I have. You will LOVE it, really!!! And you will fall in love with the close-up shots with the 55-200 lens  Can't wait to see pics!

It was just under 200. That was the cheapest I saw. It is even cheaper if you get a demo.

The close ups are amazing already and I have no idea what I am doing. I just put it on auto!

Those of you who bought this lens. Do you leave it on and this is the one you use? or do you have to take both and switch back and forth b/w the standard one and this? My D40 came with 18-55mm.

It depends what you usually shoot.
55-200mm is for close-ups. So it's hard to use for family GTG, scenery pics, etc...

I usually use the 18-55 indoors and the other one outside.
