To all the Yankee fans - Offseason Plans
With yesterday's exit from the playoffs... its time to start thinking offseason. I know the experts are already discussing this.
Who needs to stay? Who needs to go? Where do the Yanks need to upgrade?
The Yanks need to defintely fill a couple of major holes (mainly in the outfield). Will they resign Matsui as he is a FA now? Bernie is also gone... and I don't think he will be re-signed.
Thats two positions right there that need to be addressed. You may have to address your entire outfield if Sheff starts to "mouth off" which I think is very possible knowing his past.
They are good with Giambi, Jeter, and Cano in the infield.... but what will they do with A-Rod? I am sure he will become public enemy #1 now that Giambi has redeemed himself with the fans. Can you imagine a blockbuster trade... A-Rod for Manny? That trade would actually help both teams.
The Yankee bullpen is good enough... but the starting pitching has a lot of question marks. Do you stick with Chacon? What about Wang? Whats going to happen with Wright and Pavano.
And finally... will the Torre or Cashman heads roll? My vote is no on both counts.

Re: To all the Yankee fans - Offseason Plans
All good questions. IMO:
Although i am sad to say it, i do not think Bernie will be a Yankee next year. Matsui...i really hope is and i would resign. IMO Sheff is the biggest ? for me! As far as the A-rod/Giambi thing...not sure but both will stay. Yanks will NOT get rid of him for some power move. I would rather keep A-rod then actually get Manny. Yes Giambi redeemed himself but i still consider him treading on thin ice.
YES we need some power pitchers..who they will be i just am not sure right now. But i do think Wang will be out, Chacon will stay.
Torre and Cashman will not go anywhere

I think Matsui is going to resign for a few reasons. Number one... the Yanks will give him the money.
But number two.... I really don't think he is as good of a player as his numbers say. Yeah he is an RBI machine... but he is an RBI machine for the Yanks because he is surrounded by that great lineup.
If you put Matsui on a team with half the talent... his numbers I feel will kinda ****.
But he is a great fit for the Yanks... its in his best interest to re-sign with the Yanks so I can definitely see this happening.

Re: To all the Yankee fans - Offseason Plans
Ok its a scary day when I agree with you on baseball Rich.. but I agree with everything you said
Edited to add... not 100% sure about Cashman staying.. I think that the Yanks will make him an offer to stay.. I'm just not sure HE will WANT to stay
I'm also a curious about Torre.. logically speaking, you'd think Steinbrenner would not fire Torre, he'd have to eat the rest of his contract. BUT George is not logical... he'd have no problem paying Torre to sit at home and do something crazy and hire someone else... (I would NOT BE HAPPY to see Piniella in pinstripes again!!)
Mind you, I'm NOT a Torre "worshipper" .. I think he is human and has made some bonehead moves .. but I dont agree that he should take the fall for this lousy overpriced team of prima donnas (and YES I'm saying that as a Yankee fan, a DISGRUNTLED Yankee fan in the era of Sheffield, A-DUD and Johnson aka The BIG WASTE UNIT )

Re: To all the Yankee fans - Offseason Plans
Also let me add that I think the Yankees should still really try to move Giambi... not sure they'd have many takers .. and he's got that ridiculously hefty contract.. but NOW that he has redeemed himself and put up good numbers, he's more marketable..
I know he made his little comeback but I STILL think he's a liability at 1st base... he's another one who should totally DH ... and hey, it would please me to see him gone on a personal level to boot
OOH and one more thing.. as much as I NEVER LIKED ARod .. PLEASE NO MANNY - AROD trade.. I'd shoot myself for real

Re: To all the Yankee fans - Offseason Plans
If Giambi wasn't linked to the Steroids... Giambi would be a perfect fit for the Mets.
The Mets desperately need a guy that can play 1st and hit for power... AND have a high OBP by drawing walks.
Giambi fits the bill perfectly. And the Mets have money to spend. But too bad he will never come here thanks to Steroids.
The Mets will probably stick with Jacobs at 1st anyways and continue the youth movement.

Gordon will probably be gone too. He wants to close.
