TO Disney VIA AMTRAK? (and bringing the car too)?
We had heard of this 2yrs ago, I looked into it, searched online forever, was told the train leaves out of Virginia, I even called the V Ch Of Commerce, nothing. Finally my husbands coworker just mentioned it last week, and it DOES exist Has anyone done this?
Id MUCH rather fly, but hubby wont fly and Im NOT getting on a plane with 3 little boys So I heard you drive to Virginia and hop on the train, car and all... activities for the kids, etc.

Re: Disney by train? (and bringing the car too)?
I did it once with my family when I was in High School. We drove to VA and took the auto train down to Disney. My mom wasn't too keen on flying so it was our compromise. We got a sleeper car for the four of us and we had so much fun. We are extremely close (and you would need to be because it is extremely close quarters), but it was such a memorable part of the trip. We've been to Disney many times as a family but I would say this trip definately stands out (in a good way). I do believe it is more expensive than flying though so a lot of people would think it isn't worth the expense...hth

My Grandparents do this whenever they come back to New York for the summer.
The train DOES leave from VA and they drive the rest of the way.
I travelled with them once and enjoyed it.

Re: TO Disney VIA AMTRAK? (and bringing the car too)?
my family did it many many years ago and it wasn't that bad. it was about a 3-4 hour drive to Virginia, we got on the train - (auto goes in a different part of train) The train left late afternoon, we went to our cabin, had dinner, went to bed and after breakfast we arrived in Fla. I don't remember how far the train station is from WDW
from what I remember the trip was fine and didn't seem that long because most of the travel was done during the night.
have fun!

Re: TO Disney VIA AMTRAK? (and bringing the car too)?
I did it about 10 years ago, from Florida (I believe it leaves from Sanford or something?) to Virginia.
I didn't get a sleeper, just a regular seat. It was comfy enough, but I didn't sleep much. They had a sightseeing car with big glass windows which was nice. I met some nice people that day.
Eating was weird. They don't let you walk with your food tray because of the liability of dropping hot coffee on yourself. And the ride isn't completely still. You feel strange when you finally get off, to be on solid ground.
It was ok. Worth the money for me back then, so I didn't have to drive alone. But with a family, you should expect to be cramped, no matter how much you pay for a sleeper.

LOL. This was my reaction too. I'd drug my husband and drag him on the plane (though I suppose taking care of a drugged-up husband and three kids on a plane is NOT a better option). I've never done it, but it sounds like it could be a fun adventure for your family.

I agree with you! I told my husband Im flying and I'll meet them theyre, I'll be waiting by the pool with a martini
The way I see it is, NOT ONE PERSON on this earth, gets on a plane and says WOOHOO Cant wait. In todays world its NATURAL to be nervous when getting on a plane. period.
He's flown before, but since 9/11, he's even MORE convinced that he's never flying again
and I havent been to ITaly in 13yrs (and I went every other summer growing up ) so YES I think im drugging him up, good idea... or I'll just send a postcard

we'll see what the costs involved are... and the thought of 2 toddlers and an infant restrained in the car

Re: TO Disney VIA AMTRAK? (and bringing the car too)?
When we were kids, we used to spend our summers in south Florida and had to take the train one year. My sister and I had a BALL!! We were in 2nd & 3rd grade and met up with some other kids on the train so we played with them.
My mother said it was OK -- not bad but nothing she would look forward to doing again. There were a lot of stops and that made the trip seem longer. But she said the seats were comfy and is a good alternative if you won't fly.
