To our LIF members across the pond...
I know it's late, but I was just wondering what (or if-awfully ethnocentric to believe there might be but hey, who knows) the vibe is over there? Do people seem hopeful or happy regarding the events in the US today?

I've been wondering the same thing throughout the day. I am interested to hear what our LIFers abroad have to say.

Re: To our LIF members across the pond...
My dad just came back from italy yesterday and he said they were really excited. He said everyone was talking about it and all of our relatives were really excited and that they all planned to watch it.

Re: To our LIF members across the pond...
Well, I told everyone in my office last night that I was going to celebrate by making sweet American love to my husband. They all replied with ewwwwww.
I think the mood over here is very optimistic and very excited. People feel like Obama is going to give the US a really good standing as a source of good things and support to the rest of the world again. People are not thrilled with the US’s stance on Israel as from my experience, people here aren’t as pro-Israel as the Americans are, but hopefully that should start to change. This is a multicultural generation, and people now feel like they have a major world leader that they can relate to. People, in my experience, are very very very glad to see W leaving office. Very very glad.

Re: To our LIF members across the pond...
I haven't had as much of a vibe now as I did during the election, but people were still very interested. I'm detecting a slight bit of skepticism now because the media is building the whole thing up so much and people feel it's a bit naive to think that one individual can make such a difference. But the papers have devoted entire 20-page pull outs to the inauguration and the BBC aired 2 full hours of the ceremony/events.

Re: To our LIF members across the pond...
I was just in Ireland for the past week and everyone wanted to talk to us about Obama. In fact, when we landed in Shannon, the immigration officer asked us if we left DC to get away from the crowds and if we rented our house out for the inauguration.
Everyone kept saying how excited they were for Obama, that they miss Bill Clinton, and they hope things are going to change.
The pilot actually got on the PA yesterday to say that Obama had been officially been sworn in and was making his speech and everyone on the plane clapped and cheered!
