To pacify...or not....what are you "planning on"
my SIL mentioned that if you BF, a pacifier causes "nipple confusion" sometimes.
My best friend didn't use a pacifier on either of her kids.....
I'm not sure if I am absolutely not going to, or maybe.

I plan on BF and using a pacifier. I know a lot of people who did it this way and had no problems.

I breastfed and Andrew used a pacifier for only 3 months, then he found his thumb! No nipple confusion here!

I BF and Kiera used the pacifier, there was no nipple confusion at all. I BF until she was about 7 months. She actually just stopped using the pacifier all on her own last week.

Re: To pacify...or not....what are you "planning on"
I took the wait and see approach since I had heard all the BF nipple confusion rumors. My son wanted to nurse constantly and my pediatrician actually told me I should give him the pacifier because he was not hungry and some babies just have an urge to succk on something.

Re: To pacify...or not....what are you "planning on"
We tried not using a pacifier with Caiden. That only lasted the first month. I also BF exclusively until he went to daycare at 6 weeks old. So, he was using a pacifier, had a bottle and breastfed and never had a problem with any of it. He took to all of them right away. I might of been lucky though!
Oh... I also have to add he weaned from all of them without a problem too!

Re: To pacify...or not....what are you "planning on"
I BFed and tried to give her a pacifier but she didn't want any part of it. I dont think it would cause nipple confusion if you wait 2-3 weeks before introducing it.

My daughter started with the pacifier and around 7 weeks she found her thumb and that was the end of the pacifier

I'm probably going to do both. I know I'm definately going to BF and I've already purchased a couple of pacifiers.

Re: To pacify...or not....what are you "planning on"
I find it interesting that everyone talks about "nipple confusion" when discussing pacifiers...when the REAL concern should be that new parents should NOT use pacifiers to just "shut their kid up." You really should try to avoid a pacifier, just to get to know your baby and its needs.
It really has nothing to do w/nipple confusion. It has more to do w/learning the proper way to soothe your baby and identify his or her needs.
I've seen parents of 2 year olds that don't have a CLUE what their kid wants when they cry...and you guessed it...the kids still has a pacifier stuck in its mouth!

Re: To pacify...or not....what are you "planning on"
I did not BF with either child. Scotty used a pacifier only at sleep times, but handed it to me at 11 months and never had it again. Cassidy has never used one.

Re: To pacify...or not....what are you "planning on"
I'm going to wait and see. I would like to do both, but like some of the other posts said...not all babies like the same thing. So I will have to wait and see what the baby prefers.

Re: To pacify...or not....what are you "planning on"
I used to think like Clad.. Untill the baby came... I use a pacifier only when I have tried everything else. I have read that Babies actually need to use the sucking refelx.. not only when eating
