To pump and dump for a few weeks or give up bfing?support/advice needed
I'm at a loss of what to do. Last night I ended up in the er with pain that was making me blackout. Keep in mind I didn't take anything stronger than motrin after my csection. The dr there diagnosed me and put me on two types of meds: perocet and an antibiotoc that is the best for the problem but I have to pump and dump with both of them. I may be on meds for 10-14 days until i'm better. Dd is being supplemented with alimentum due to me not producing enough thanks to pcos and she has a milk protein allergy (i changed my entire diet). I am just not getting the support I need to pump and dump for the next few weeks. Everybody is basically telling me to throw in the towel. Dh is trying to be encouraging but I can tell deep down he expects me to give up. Does it pay to keep going even though dd is only getting half bm and will not be getting any for the next two weeks?

How old is DD?
Not that you need to answer, but how long did you plan on BF'ing for?

There are plenty of people who only pump so it's definitely worth doing for a short time instead of BFing directly. I would pump and dump then go back to BFing as soon as you are able to. You'll never be able to get it back if you don't. You can also use that time to pump a little more frequently to help increase your supply. You might want to take supplements (you can also get Rx ones from your doc if you ask) that may be able to eliminate the need for supplementing all together! This could be a gift for you! Do what's in your heart and if you don't want to stop BFing, then don't - pump for now.

I am sorry you are in pain. I hope you feel better.
Have you asked your doctor for any medicines that you can take while BF? There are usually options. I also went through hell and lots of different medicines and surgeries while I was BF. Many people told me to give up BF, but I refused. There are options. Ask you doctor for something you can take that is safer for BF. (I am stupid, but I thought percocet you could BF with. Isn't that what they give new moms after c-sections? I may have forgotten.) Also, there are a few antibiotics that are safer during BF. I had a blood infection after giving birth and I thought I was put on Keflex, or something like that.
If you need some support, please FM me as I don't go on the boards as often as I used to.

Thank you. Dd is 5.5 weeks and I planned on bfing for a year or at the very least, 6 months. I should have daid earlier that I have been pumping and only nursed 1x per day. I can't change the meds. I asked the er dr and called my regular dr today. This is the medicine that will get me better fastest and I need to get better to care for dd.

Is regular dr your obgyn? If not, call your obgyn. I was also told the same thing. You can ask more questions, specific questions. Also, you can see if you can just go on these meds for a few days, to curtail the main problem, then switch to a safer alternative to ride out the rest of the infection.
ETA: For my problem, when DS was only a few weeks, they told me to go on aggressive medicine and said to do no other meds. When I asked specific questions, I found out it would be the difference of one more day of the infection. I took it.

Re: To pump and dump for a few weeks or give up bfing?support/advice needed
Funny you just posted this. I just got off the phone with my ob. He said until the issue is resolved I shouldn't bf to be on the safe side. He said to pump and dump for a week and then reevaluate the issue which is what the er dr said. As much as I want to bf, I know I need to get better so I don't get worse. I was close to beibg admitted last night and I cannot be away from dd. Posted by waterspout4

I hope you feel better soon! Just remember that being admitted is not the end of the world. I was re-admitted when DS was 6 days old. I fought hard to BF. There were days that I had to pump and dump for a few days at a time, but I got right back into it. If you want to do it, you can do it. Just get yourself better!

Thank you so much for the encouragement Kelly! I'm going to use this time to try and up my supply.

YOU CAN DO IT!!! If this something you really want to do, try to think of it long term. The next 14 days will suck...but its only 14 days...
