To stuff or not to stuff?
This is my first time hosting Thanksgiving and I'm very nervous!
So can someone walk me through the pros and cons of stuffing or not stuffing the turkey? Does it really make a difference? It seems so much easier not to stuff it...
I will have stuffing no matter what, just not sure what advantage, if any, there is to putting it in the turkey.

Re: To stuff or not to stuff?
I've always heard that stuffing the turkey is a health hazard because the inside of the bird doesn't get hot enough to kill bacteria, so the stuffing just kind of soaks up the turkey juices and might carry bacteria. I'd go with cooking it separately. Especially since it's easier for you!

Re: To stuff or not to stuff?
I've been stuffing the bird for years. You should only stuff it right before throwing it in the oven & never pack stuffing tightly inside the cavity. After stuffing the cavity I mound it near the opening where it gets nice and crispy.
I've also made it in a baking dish and add a couple of basters full of the turkey drippings for lots of rich flavor (after the turkey is done of course).

I've heard this too. I don't know if it's true, but it skeeves me enough to not stuff the bird.

Re: To stuff or not to stuff?
We stuff if it's only our immediate family (ie DH and I plus ILs or my folks), but if we're having company and its extended family, we don't stuff because we're afraid someone might get sick.

This!
I usually shove some carrots, celery, onions, garlic in the cavity for flavor.

Stuffing is an entity all it's own..I leave the stuffing in it's glory by itself.
Turkey is secondary to the stuffing.

Better to save the massive diarrhea for the immediate family. I agree!

Re: To stuff or not to stuff?
I never stuff. Two reasons-- first, a lot of people are skeeved by a stuffed turkey because of the health risk. I myself won't eat stuffing that was in a turkey. Second, if you don't put sausage in your stuffing, the stuffing is a nice meatless side for vegetarians to enjoy, and having the meat juices in the stuffing will turn off many vegetarians.

Re: To stuff or not to stuff?
I do both cause my family LOVES it from the bird.... while the bird is resting, i throw the stuffing that was in the bird in a roasting dish and put it in the oven to make sure it is safe to eat.
I personally would be fine with the out of the bird stuffing....I don't put too much in the bird!

To stuff or not to stuff?
We put some in the bird and some of the same stuffing in a casserole to cook. Let everyone know which is which. In the bird always goes first.

Re: To stuff or not to stuff?
Thanks ladies! In the interest of simplicity (and wanting to avoid stomach illness!) I'm going unstuffed

Re: To stuff or not to stuff?
We have a turkey breast, so there is nothing to stuff I don't like picking bags of turkey parts out of turkey crevices!
