To the ladies whose husbands/brothers/sisters (etc) that are cops on here.....
Just wanted to say thank you! I just had THE nicest Suffolk County Police Officer (Messina, in case anyone knows him) come to my house so I could report the person who broke into my car last night...while nothing was stolen (THANK GOD) he still was polite enough to take his time with me, explain what they were probably looking for, what precautions I could take....thanked ME (ME??!!) for giving them a heads up b/c it's good for them to know these things! I was like well, it was my own stupid fault for not locking my damn car!!! He's like "no, not at all. You should be safe enough in your home to be able to leave it unlocked one night on accident. but you hit a night when this guy was probably just roaming around grabbing all handles on cars"...He also said that with the economy being how it is, they've seen this happen a lot more but they are looking for something specific (lucky for me, it wasn't a GPS!!) so just to be a little more careful nowadays.
The whole thing weirdly freaked me out...that someone was in my car going through my things and just tossing it like it was garbage and UGH was he roaming around my house...FREAKS me out! (on a funny note, I called DH this morning to yell at him for going through my console looking for something and just leaving it out all over the place LOL)
Either way... I just felt like publicly saying thanks!

You should write a letter to his command...they love getting "thank you" letters! It's always nice to know the simple things you do are appreciated! Sorry this happened to you...not sure where you park your car, but motion detection floodlights are always a great deterrent if someone's roaming around your property!

Good idea about the letter. My car was at the top of my driveway, which is why this has freaked me out. We do have a motion sensor which is what may have scared them away possibly. (hopefully!)

This is a great story! Definitely write a letter to his command. All too often police officers get a bad rap and are spoken about negatively...it's nice to read a story on the contrary!

Definitely write a letter and send it to his precinct. It really makes my DH's day when he gets a letter like that.

Aww, sounds like the kind of cop Kenneth is... that's so nice to hear he was professional and helpful. I had someone come to the house once because I set the alarm off by accident - I felt so bad and apologized... So, he said "oh no miss, this is my job -- it's OK -- just want to make sure you are alright". It was great.
Def a great idea about the letter!!!

That's great!
I had a nice police officer in my area come to my house in April as well to go over safety tips as he took my police report when my GPS was stolen out of my car (and DH's Ipod).
Unfortunately, this is happening more frequently across the area because of the economy.
They caught people 3 houses down from me though 2 months ago doing the same thing - they target towns where people are trusting enough to leave their cars unlocked and where driveways are close together.
