TODAY!!! Bone Marrow Donor Drive in Northport for a 2nd grader
received this email from our district:
We are working to support one of our second grade students, Gia, who has ALL (a type of leukemia). Gia is in need of a bone marrow transplant and we are hoping to find a donor match. A “donor drive” will be held at Norwood Avenue Elementary School on April 18th, and all adults are welcome to come in to complete a questionnaire and cheek swab. In addition to helping Gia, this may be an opportunity to get on a national registry for others in need of bone marrow transplants. Please note that you are not obligated to donate at this time – that is a personal decision for the future. For now, we are focused on finding a match for Gia.

Please feel free to pass this on to anyone who might be interested!

Me too! Getting swabbed is so easy. It is great that they are allowing people to get swabbed and tested for this specific match without joining the national registry.
If you do decide to join the national registry make sure you understand the responsibility. Many people join and when called decline going through with the procedure. Make sure to update the registry if a medical or personal reason would keep you from donating when called. A match is so specific, it may be years until you are called or most likely you will never be called. However if you are, you have the power to save someone's life.

Stories like this break my heart. There was a Bone Marrow Donor Drive in my neighborhood a coup[le of months ago. It was a great turn out. I am already registered. I hope they find a match for Gia!

If you are ever a match for someone what do you have to do medically to donate to them?
Also can you "donate" if you are pregnant?

You cannot donate when you're pregnant.
I'm not sure about what it entails to donate because I've never been selected since I've been on the registry.
This is only a cheek swab from what I've read.

I'm on the registry - have been for years.
My DH was a donor last year and recalls it as an almost life-changing experience for him....to be given the opportunity to basically (possibly) save another life.
Everyone should get swabbed!

Re: Bone Marrow Donor Drive in Northport for a 2nd grader
This is my sister's friend's daughter. Such an amazing little girl.
Hoping she beats this cancer for good.
I just registered at Kailtyn's drive in Wantagh.
I can't believe how many children have to suffer!
Did they move the drive or is this in addition to the plainview hospital one?

It's in addition to the Plainview one. This is Gia's school's drive.

I sent my kit in over a month ago. I got one email saying they received it. About how long does it take before they add you to the registry? Do they notify you when you are added on?

Re: REMINDER: APRIL 18th! Bone Marrow Donor Drive in Northport for a 2nd grader
This may be a stupid question but if you're already on the registry, is it still helpful to get a swab just in case you're a match for this beautiful little girl?

I was told it wasn't necessary to get swabbed if you're on the registry already.

Re: REMINDER: APRIL 18th! Bone Marrow Donor Drive in Northport for a 2nd grader
I wish I could. I've been banned from donating blood/blood products because I received a couple of doses of human growth hormone as a child. No problems in me...but because of my history, they will never let me donate again.
But I will pass this along to others.
