Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day
Let's Never Forget.
Article:
It has been over 60 years since the Holocaust. To survivors, the Holocaust remains real and ever-present, but for some others, sixty years makes the Holocaust seem part of ancient history. Year-round we try to teach and inform others about the horrors of the Holocaust. We confront the questions of what happened? How did it happen? How could it happen? Could it happen again? We attempt to fight against ignorance with education and against disbelief with proof.
But there is one day in the year when we make a special effort to remember (Zachor). Upon this one day, we remember those that suffered, those that fought, and those that died. Six million Jews were murdered. Many families were completely decimated.

Re: Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day
visiting Dachau was truly one of the most chilling, haunting, and oddly enough, inspiring days of my life.
it is a heartbreak...a human stain beyond measure.
and also an amazing testament to the human spirit.

My mind still can't wrap itself around the total loss of humanity the SS displayed (murdering children/infants/the elderly). May we never forget the atrocities that occurred

Re: Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day
There were also millions of non-jewish people murdered...this is a lesser known fact, even to myself until recently when my Dh met & befriended a Polish woman who survived a camp and enlightened him. We've been to the halocaust musuem in D.C. which was incredible. It's amazing how one person was able to carry out such atrocities while the world looked on. Let's hope we learn from history and never forget all who were murdered.

You are 100% correct. There were 12 million people murdered, half of which were jews. The other half were Catholics, gays, and a lot of gypsies, communists and other political dissidents, , slavs, Jehovah's Witnesses, dissidents, some Protestant pastors and Catholic priests, black people, the mentally and physically disabled, and others.
Lets not forget! And lets also remember that the same things are going on TODAY in other parts of the world, on smaller scales. Think of Dafur.

Re: Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day
I know it may sound morbid, but this is a huge interest of mine and DH's. Everything surrounding it- the holocaust, the Nazi's, Hitler- and even with all of the documentaries, research and movies (we actually just watched Schindler's list again a few weeks ago), we still just can't fathom HOW it happened, how it continued and how people could turn such a blind eye to it. I also dont understand how it took the rest of the world so long to step in and get involved (which is why i dont fault Bush for going after Hussein, as i truly liken him to Hitler, but i hope that doesn't turn this thread at all). As much as i study it and learn about it, i just don't think i'll ever understand it- it's too big for me to comprehend.

Not morbid at all. As long as people continue to educate themselves, those who were lost did not die in vain.

I agree. We just celebrated my daughter's Simcha Bat this past weekend. She is named after DH's grandmother and her sister. Her sister was killed along side her grandfather during the war. My husband made a very moving speech explaining the origin of DD's hebrew name and told stories of how his grandmother survived and the things she had to endure during this time.

Re: Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day
To this day, I cannot comprehend the atrocities that was put upon millions of people. The Jewish population and those who helped them and allies to free Europe from those monsters. I cry everytime I watch a documentary or imagine what it "could" have been like if I had been in those people's shoes. To lose everything. Being in complete disbelief of what was unfolding. I look at my son and cannot imagine someone would want to hurt him.
The monster was not alone. Doctors, etc.. found this war an excuse to do things that I cannot believe a human being was capable of.
But yes, this is day, such genocide, torturing, mutilation, etc... still exists. Different country. History repeats itself.

Re: Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day
We will always remember As devastating, tragic and horrid those events were, I also see them as a testament to the strength and endurance of people, and particularly of the jewish culture. That, despite so many attempts to wipe us off the planet, we are still surviving, and thriving.
And even though I'm not religious, one of my missions as a mother is to continue that thriving culture, and to continue the memory, and the legacy of strength, endurance and persistance to my children. I will tell and re-tell my family's story and my MIL's story so that it is ingrained in my children, and they have the same appreciation for what their ancestors went through so they could proudly call themselves jews, just as I do.

I am with you. I am re-reading a book a read in HS called the Nazi Officer's Wife right now actually and everytime I go to the library I take a book out related to the subject.
It still TO THIS DAY boggles my mind that people who do not understand the MAGNITUDE of evil would rather choose NOT to believe it. I actually had a conversation with my cousin like three days ago re: her college class on the subject and the fact that she believes it was exaggerated!! I am dragging her to the Holocaust Museum in DC...it's life-changing. I highly recommend people go there at least once.
