Today's changes to fight colic/digestive problems after going to doctor... thoughts? Experiences?

Hi!

Okay... so we switched baby OFF Nutramigen since his belly was bothering him so badly and he's been screaming the past few nights and back to being fussy. (My original doc never actually tested the poop for a milk protein allergy... he just put us on the Nutramigen as trial and error). Soooooo... today they tested his poopie and there was nothing wrong with it, which is good.

The doc said my boy is full of a LOT of gas and his belly is distended. He recommended Gerber Good Start, so I bought the "Protect" one with the probiotics in it.

I'm adding Gas Relief drops directly to the bottles instead of before or after, as someone here suggested to do.

He also suggested trying different nipple sizes to try to eliminate air getting into his belly as much as possible. So I'm currently trying MAM bottles which fit his mouth better.

I caved and bought the Nap Nanny... even though it's MUCH DINERO.

I also found this herbal belly wrap thing that's supposed to be soothing to babies with colic/gas.

So, with all of the above, I'm PRAYING this works. He's currently well fed, changed after a big poopie, swaddled with the Belly Wrap and sleeping on the Nap Nanny. Pray with me that this works!!! I want my baby to be happy so, so, so, so badly!!!

Thank you all for your support and advice!

Oh - does anyone have any experience/success with the items I just mentioned?

For gas, never shake the bottle when preparing powdered formula use a spoon to stir. It made a big difference in ds. Dr. Brown bottles worked the best for us too. And ds was zantac

DS was colicky and gassy and the gas drops and dr browns bottles worked for our little guy. We put drops in every bottle and it worked like a charm. By 4 months we stopped the gas drops completely and he was totally fine. Give it a few days and you should have a happy baby

From your lips to God's ears!!!

We've been using Dr. Brown's bottles, but we think since the nipple is relatively small, that he's been taking in too much air on the sides. It's possible that the MAM bottle nipples are bigger and take up more of his mouth (in fact, his ENTIRE mouth), so less air, hopefully, gets in.

We never shake the bottles... just stirring for us!

Thank you!

Good luck!!
DS doesn't have those issues, but we prefer Gerber good start b/c it makes him pass gas more. We use the gentle kind, and there was def. a difference for the better. hope that it works for you Chat Icon

dr. Browns worked for us in the gas department. the herbal bell wrap didn't really work but i didnt use it consistently.

honestly the only thing that really worked was time. DD has very bad gas from about 1.5m to 2.5m (but she was a preemie so not sure how that translates to a full term baby). after that her digestive system just started to get the hang of passing the gas. now at 4.5m she barely ever gets gassy and when she does she passes it no problem.

i tried switching formulas and bottles and in the end changing too much just messed her up even more. i never found a really obvious "cure." you may not find something that eliminates it completely. assuming that your baby doesnt have any real digestive issue (ie allergy, intolerance, etc) just go with whatever combo makes the most sense and within a few weeks as baby gets bigger and the body develops, the gas will slowly go away. its just a normal part of digestive development for some babies. it sucks, but it will pass quickly (no pun intended!!).

I had an extremely gassy baby and ultimately, time was what he needed! He was so much better around 3 months.

I know people don't agree with this, but I used to let him sleep on his stomach during the day. He was so much more comfortable - the pressure helped him get the gas out. He started rolling over really early and has been a belly sleeper since.

Always make sure that the nipple is filled with formula/milk so that your baby is not sucking in air! Chat Icon

One thing on the bottles- my ped recommended the Playtex nursers- because you can push all the air out of the drop in liner before feeding.
I found this really helped with DD"s gas!
