Today's parade and the FDNY
What happened with them? Did they get to march after the NYPD or in the middle? Did the FDNY EMT bagpipers get to do their thing? Anyone know?

FDNY was further back than the cops. Not sure about the bagpipers.

The bagpipers led off the whole dept. The overall turnout of firemen was lower than usual.

Re: Today's parade and the FDNY
Yeah the firefighters were led by the bagpipers and they marched somewhat in the middle. The firemen that held the flags for the fallen members from 9-11 led followed by more firefighters....seemed to be quite a lot according to the parade on NBC....they played on the tv if I'm not mistaken around 1:30 or so.

Re: Today's parade and the FDNY
why is it that the St Patty's day parade has so much politics surrounding it? I can't think of any other parade that has any kind of controversy like this one
it's supposed to be a happy occasion. keep all the politics and BS out!

Re: Today's parade and the FDNY
My DH is FDNY EMS and marched. Their bagpipers were NOT supposed to play, but they did anyway. DH said that the parade organizer turned his back on them when they went by b/c the bagpipers were played.
ETA: The FDNY EMS bagpipers are different from the "regular" FDNY bagpipers, the FDNY bagpipers were always allowed to play, while EMS' were not supposed to. EMS walked before the FDNY, but they weren't on TV.

Re: Today's parade and the FDNY
I'm sorry but I thought there was something life-altering the way the news reported it. Everyone is grown up - they all should just move past it.

Because the parade is run by a private Catholic Fraternal men's organization. Many NYers are mistaken and think the parade rules/regulations are made up by the city or a more public organization. Basically, if the politics or actions of one group goes against the politics or actions of the parade organizers then the parade organizers can deny them a spot in the parade.
Trust me, I don't agree with much of the politics, but because it is run by a private organization, they get to say who marches, in what order, etc. It is still very competitive to get a spot marching in the St. Patrick's Day parade. Many a school, band, dancing school, etc. has been turned down, wait listed or not invited back because of their conduct during the parade (and other reasons). If the city, or a more democratic organization, was running the parade then the decision as to what groups can and can't march would probably be different.

Of course they have RIGHT to do it, just like the boyscouts. But I think they abuse the power sometimes, esp in cases like with FDNY.
Also, concerning ILGO, the speaker of the NYC council marched yesterday in DUBLIN. I just find it ironic and sad that the Hibernians keep gay groups out, but in ireland they are welcomed

So did they march right after the NYPD, or further back like the news was reporting?

I think in Dublin, members of ILGO don't march under their own banner. In NYC the parade is more then just an Irish pride parade, it is a Catholic parade. Hence the issue around ILGO. The AOH never said that Irish gays couldn't march, they said they couldn't march under their own banner.
FDNY had every right to be p-off. The line of march is very significant at the parade. They should have been moved up, no questions about that.

I think the FDNY issue is really a slap in the face. It really disturbs me.
As far as I know, gay groupos can march a s group, with a banner in Dublin
