toddlers and TV time--going to bed
So we try very hard to limit my son's screen time but lately that is not easy. He does have a TV in his room. The TV had been there since it was our guest room. Well, now he went through a fussy period about 2 weeks ago and it was hard to get him down for bed. So we started to let him watch a Clifford video and fall asleep to it. Now some nights he keeps himself up until the video is over but he does fall asleep when the credits are rolling. So we put him in earlier to factor in the time to watch the video. I feel like this whole thing is not good. He's a very easy kid but now I feel like he has these crutches to sooth him at night (paci, which we have a plan to get rid of and TV, which is a new thing). We do also read several books at night and we have other bedtime rituals. Now we do all of those before the Clifford video. I guess there are worse things I could do, right?
As for the other bedtime rituals, it cracks me up that one of them is to put aquaphor on his face. We were doing that a lot when his skin was chafed but now he insists on it or he will not go to bed. He says, "time for A-kaphor." Such a diva with his face creme .

Re: toddlers and TV time--going to bed
Christopher doesn't have a TV in his room but he watches Team UmiZoomi and Max and Ruby before bed, and same thing, it used to be just M&R and now Zoomis are included.
TBH, I don't think its the end of the world. My mom always says that when I was my kid's age I went to sleep in their room watching Fame (and she goes "I'm pretty sure that was inappropriate" ) and I have no recollection of it and I am sure slept in my own room

Thanks, I think I am more worried because I don't fall asleep easily and I don't want DS to be like that! I do stay asleep but it's hard to get there, KWIM? I've been like this for a long time.

Re: toddlers and TV time--going to bed
I wish I could help - my preschooler usually falls asleep on the couch while I am reading her a story - or ten!! I have tried to do this in her bedroom but she seems to get so wired when I take her up there that we fall into the habit of doing this as its easier.
I don't know about falling asleep on front of the T.V though - could be a bad habit - would you consider telling him the T.V is broken in there and maybe buying him some new books to get excited about and maybe a clifford to sleep with - if he does not have one already.
Maybe now I have bumped this you might get some better ideas!

When DS was little (he is almost 2 now) we would put in a Baby Einstein video and he fall asleep to it every night. I also felt guilty and stopped cold turkey. Instead I let him choose a stuffed animal to sleep with and I can't believe it, but it worked! Honestly though, it's not the worst thing in the world. I ALWAYS went to sleep with the TV on when I was little and I'm OK (I think LOL).

I am considering taking the TV out of the room but I hope I do not have to. I like to play with him in his room and we use the DVD player for music CDs. So we are in his room even during the day (which some people say can make it hard to associate the room with sleep, so I have to think about it). He does sleep with a Clifford doll .

Re: toddlers and TV time--going to bed
I don't think it is a big deal.
If you are limiting his TV time for the most part and still doing books, etc I don't see the harm in it.
DD gets 1 or 2 shows after dinner, at the end of the day, before bed. Then we do books, etc.
It's the same thing, just in a different order (and DD doesn't have a TV in her room).
I have big issues with the amount of TV DD watches, but I don't think there is anything wrong with what you are doing.

Re: toddlers and TV time--going to bed
I wouldn't keep the TV in his room, but I am not a fan of TVs in the bedroom for anyone, child or adult.
Our situation is a little different, because we don't really go upstairs to play in his room during the day, unless he remembers there is something up there that he wants. When it's bedtime, we go up, read a few books and then it's bedtime. I have been getting more resistance lately and I am not sure if he doesn't need to go up as early, or it's just the age and something to fight me on. I have a dimmer switch in his room, so I usually give him a book to look at in the crib and dim the light very low. That seems to work for now.
