Toddlers who don't sleep in their own room

we are ready to scream! My three year old needs either my husband or myself to get her to sleep. Then once we do and we leave her room she wakes up the longest 2hrs later... Then it starts all over again.
I don't know what to do, but I want our night life together back, any suggestions???

Re: Toddlers who don't sleep in their own room

it's nice to know we aren't the only ones!

She used to sleep great when she was an infant, don't know what happened?
Says she's scared but she's smart so i think that's a cop out!

I have a king size bed and i feel like i'm sleeping in a twin!

Next child i will do things soo differently!

Re: Toddlers who don't sleep in their own room

We have the same problem! My son slept fine on his own until around 18 months. We thought getting him his own bed would help, but it got worse. Then we moved here into the new house and for the first three months it was great! I decided to sleep on his floor with him for a week to get him used to sleeping in his own room. He was fine. He slept through the night, would wake up in the morning and would play with his toys. It was wonderful, but then one day something happened and now he is in our room almost every night. Between the dog and ds it is getting crowded. Wish we had the answer!

Re: Toddlers who don't sleep in their own room

Well, I'm no help because my son just turned 8 and he is in my bed most nights! If he starts out in his bed, he ends up in mine. It's just me in the bed, but he really is getting entirely too old to be sleeping with his mommy. He isn't a clingy type kid either so I don't get it. The next baby will be in the crib after a couple of months in the bassinet!

If you are not against CIO, it is not too late for that tactic, in my opinion. Put the child to bed, when he wakes wait 5 or 10 minutes, go back in, say very little besides "its time for bed, I love you", and put them back in bed. Keep going back in 10 minute intervals added 10 mintues each time. This worked for us and my 2 year old sleeps without issue from 8-8 every night.

that tactic sounds grreatt! but did your two year old stay in his room when you said it was time for bed! i can put my daughter into the bed, its just that she'll run out of her room... she won't wait the ten minutes.... she won't even wait two minutes, its torcher... if you can, explain in detail, i'll try anything at this point!

Re: Toddlers who don't sleep in their own room

Jack moved to his bed when he was about 20 months and he couldnt reach the doorknob, then one day at 7am I wake up to Jack in my bedroom sayinhg" Hi Mommy!" So I then put the child doorknob safety thing on so he can't open the door. It made him so mad the first night, but he got over it.

I'm assuming your 3 year old can figure out those doorknob covers so the next best thing is to switch the doorknob so the lock is on the outside and you can lock the door. Your child will probably be very angry when you lock the door and will throw tantrums, but stick it out and they will give in and learn to understand that you are boss and soon enough you will have your nights back to yourself! Good luck!

My son is 4 1/2 and does not always sleep in his own room. He did want to sleep in our bed b ut he snorses and kicks me so thats out. He has one of those little soft kiddie couches that he brings into our room. He tells me leave it here just in case I dont want to be alone. Chat Icon . At least he doestn wake me - he just goes in and sleeps on his couch now.

Re: Toddlers who don't sleep in their own room

DD gave us a hard time at first but i know it is bad but she usually passes out on out beda nd we transfer her to her room and she sleeps the whole night. But when she is awake and on the verge of getting tired we put her in her bed. she is allowed to have a book in there and that jut puts her to sleep. she also sleeps with an jungle of stuffed animals that i have told her that is she does not sleep in her bed i will give them away to children who have nothing. That always seems to work. I also bought her a " Big girl" pillow that is not allowed to leave the bed and that ehlps her sleep.

All i can say is Good luck....

she would not sleep in her room at home but slept 11.5 hours at my parents on Sat....( made it a big deal becasue it was my old room)

the change of the door knob sounds good! But I know she'll freak! I'm afraid of terrorising her though! I don't want her to be afraid! But i do want her to understand! It's def. going to be tough! Thanks for your help! Keep the suggestions flowing ladies! Chat Icon
