Toddlers who won't eat dinner??
Can I get some advice from BTDT moms of toddlers who refuse to eat dinner?
DS is almost 20 months old and has always been a very good eater. He used to sit with us at the table while he was in his high chair and it was wonderful. Then he refused his high chair so we put him in a booster seat at the table and that bought us about a week of pleasant meals. Then he refused the booster seat so we let him sit in a regular chair at the table, but now he won't even sit in the chair at all. We try to coax him to eat with us but he just won't stay put. I know that on weekends when he IS hungry he walks over to the table and tries to climb in a chair for 'snack' but week night dinnertime is turning into a giant struggle.
Should we force him to sit in the booster seat while DH and I eat or should we just ride out this 'phase' -- someone please tell me this is a phase....
TIA, Ladies...

Re: Toddlers who won't eat dinner??
It's definitely a phase. My son went thru the same thing and so did my niece. They even went thru the priod where they didn't want to eat at all. At first I was worried so I spoke to his doctor as well as read some of the parenting books. Both said it was a natural phase. Not all toddlers got thru it but alot do. As long as he gets his vitamins and drinks plenty of fluids to keep him hydrated, he'll be fine. Trust me when he's hungry he will eat. If it continues for more than a week or two (can't remember hw long it was for my son) then I would say talk to his doctor to make sure there is nothing else wrong. But all in all it is a phase and he'll get thru it

Re: Toddlers who won't eat dinner??
If its a phase its the longest one yet. DS is 26 months and dinner is a FIGHT every single night.
If he doesnt want to sit and eat dinner, we dont make him and he can get down and go play while DH and I eat. We do not make him a seperate meal and if he doesnt eat whats on the table then he doesnt get dinner.
Its so frustrating I know, but its much more pleasant since we just let it go and he doesnt eat if he doesnt want to. He wont let himself starve, hell eat at some point.

lol..ok maybe I was just lucky then. I guess as a new mom I panicked when my son wouldn't eat. I tought he was going to starve. all he wanted was juice or water or chocolate milk! Speaking to my doctor and remembering my niece went thru the exact same thing is what kept me sane. He would fight tooth and nail at dinner time because he didn't want to eat. So we just left him alone and he started to come around later and would say he was hungry.

Thanks, ladies!
We'll keep trying, but all DS wants to do is read books at the table, which I like but not during dinner!

Re: Toddlers who won't eat dinner??
I do not force dinner on DD. I offer it, but if she doesn't want it, no biggie. If she sits with us, great. If not, again, no biggie.
She usually eats well for breakfast and lunch, and I have read that it is very common for toddlers to get all the food they need during those 2 meals.

Re: Toddlers who won't eat dinner??
My dd started this at about that age and I hate to say, she is still a TERRIBLE eater at home, she will NOT sit at the table and winds up eating dinner, on days that she eats at all, in the living room table on her princess fold up chair
she is 2 1/2

my sitter says she eats breakfast and lunch great so I don't stress it either

I don't have any advice but just wanted you to know you are not alone. We are so there with you-it is a battle that I hope is a phase that passes soon!
