Tom Suozzi introduces bill to make Nassau County first No-Kill shelter county in the state!

I can't find an article just yet--but News 12 just announced this story--saying that he hopes to focus more on adoption and education, and make it so that all shelters in Nassau County are no-kills--and it would make Nassau the first no-kill shelter county in the entire state of NY!!!

Wow that's great!

The only question that comes to mind is how are these shelters going to keep up? For that matter how will they afford to take care of these dogs and cats. It is my understanding that the reason these shelters are kill-shelters is b/c they don't have the space or resources to take care of them.

Believe me, there is nothing more I'd like to see than all the county shelters in Nassau become kill-free but I just don't see how it's possible?

I have the same question... and I would love for all the shelters to be no kill, too. I'm just not sure it's feasible.

Honestly (and I'm prepared to get flamed for this), I believe there are far worse fates than a humane end. I'd rather see an animal humanely euthanized than abused or starved. I would LOVE for all the shelters to be no kill shelters, but I fear that they will run out of room. Is Nassau County prepared to expand its shelters to handle the caseload, or will they be turning needy animals away due to lack of space?

If this can be done right, I'm all for it... but I fear that it could cause problems...

Does anyone know any specifics about the bill that addresses these issues?

wow that would be amazing! i'm all for it.. but i have a feeling shelters might get way to crowding causing more pets to be left on the streetsChat Icon I hope they can find a way to make this work! and then hopefully more counties follow!!!

I have to agree. That would be great, but I don't see how this is possible. There simply aren't enough homes for all these animals. Not everyone adopts when they are looking for a dog. And some of those dogs that come into shelters are not adoptable.

I don't know that keeping a dog in a metal cage for 23 hours a day with little human contact for the rest of their life is more humane than putting them to sleep.
