Tonsil and Adenoid removal

My son is 4 1/2 years old and is scheduled to have his tonsils and adenoids removed in July. We have been putting this off for over a year, and its time now.

Anyway, I am wondering what to expect in terms of recovery?

Thanks for any information

Re: Tonsil and Adenoid removal

My son had them out last fall, he was 8. He had to stay overnight at Good Sam in West Islip and felt okay right after, but once the pain set in, he wasn't a happy camper. As long as you stay on top of the pain medicine, it shouldn't be too bad. He would wake up and be in pain because the meds wore off over night. He was out of school for a week, and no physical activity for 3 weeks after. He always had excess saliva pooled in his mouth because they were so enlarged and had such a hard time swallowing. Since he's had them removed, it's been a huge improvement. Good luck! Where are you having it done?

My 3 yo had them both removed about 5-6 weeks ago. I'm glad others posted about positive experiences before my post because for us it was a nightmare. Mostly because my DD was so young and would refuse the meds and would spit it out. If she took the pain meds it would have been a lot better. We gave her regular tylenol instead. The nights were the worst. She would scream in pain and didn't know how to deal with it and got pretty aggressive. It was heart breaking. By day 10 she was back to her old self. Also the first day was great, she was still feeling the meds from the hospital. The worst set in at the end of the second day. Now that we are through it, we are very happy we didn't put it off longer.

Definitely try to keep on top of the pain meds. Expect really bad breath, really bad, this is normal and you can tell when they are getting better when it starts to get better.

I wish you lots of luck. I hope your son tolerates it well. Please FM me if you have any questions.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Tonsil and Adenoid removal

I work in a kindergarten class. One of the students had just his adenoids removed last Monday and was back to school by Thursday.

But again, that was just his adenoids. I don't know how it is with tonsils too.

My dd just had the adenoids removed. She had the surgery on Friday was back at school on Monday and didn't need the pain meds. I've heard with the tonsils, being out a week and pain meds needed.

Re: Tonsil and Adenoid removal

He is having it done at Huntington Hospital. They said it would take under an hour and that we would be there for 4-5 hours after he wakes up from the anesthesia.

He is pretty good about taking meds, so that should be ok.

Thanks for the feedback! I really have no idea what to expect.
