Tony Soprano supports Marty Tankleff
Some LIFers will remember that I am a Marty Tankleff supporter and that I try to keep up with his case. Marty's press agent posted this today on www.martytankleff.org:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today is Marty's 36th birthday, and he got a nice present--a visit from actor/producer James Gandolfini. By all accounts, the two hit if off and had a great time talking. Gandolfini now counts himself among Marty's supporters in his fight for a new trial, and the public can expect to hear from Gandolfini soon on the topic.
Gandolfini first heard about Marty's case from Jay Salpeter, the two having met when Jay was an advisor on one of Gandolfini's films, "Lonely Hearts."

I barely remember how I first became interested. I started to just read all I could, including the legal pleadings. I started to post questions/comments on martytankleff.org. It is like being on here. There are so many different personalities but the board is not super active all the time (well, that part is not like here). Eventually I started to talk privately to some of the other supporters. I went to a Town Meeting about Marty. The case was quiet for a while but one of the other supporters would send e-mails if there was any update.

He was 17 year old kid from Port Jeff (Belle Terre) who was convicted of killing his parents in the 80's.
There are people out there who believe he's innocent of the charges and are doing everything in their power to get him a new trial.
FTR, I don't think he did it either Ker.

I know I 've heard his name.
I think I actually saw a 48 hours on him or something.

Re: Tony Soprano supports Marty Tankleff
My mom was one of Marty's teachers, and we have quite a few "Free Marty" buttons around my house.
I also worked for a law firm which worked very closely with Jay Salpeter...
It's a shame he is still behind bars, it really is.

I don't think he did it.
I know a lot of criminal defense attorneys who agree with you and feel he got an incredibly raw deal.

Yeah, the whole story is rather sketchy.

Yes, there was a 48 hours/dateline like program done on him not that long ago. I saw it. The whole thing is so shady. I definitely think his father's business partner was involved.

Not to mention that his confession was coirced and his whole family (besides his half sister who was pizzed that he inherited his parents money)supports him and believes he didn't to it.
It is truly a miscarriage of justice.

I am reading all the newsday articles on it. And in the begining she was a supporter. When he was out on bail he lived with her.

She stopped supporting him when she learned that he would lose his inheritance if found guilty, and that her inheritance would thereby increase. However, I think she has wavered over the years. At one point, after the trial, her husband owned a bar/restaurant in partnership with the lead detective on the case.

NEWSDAY STORY:
Newsday.com Gandolfini visits convict BY ZACHARY R. DOWDY
[email protected]
August 30, 2007
"The Sopranos" star James Gandolfini went behind state prison walls to mark the 36th birthday of a Suffolk man whose sensational murder case has gained national attention itself.
Gandolfini drove hundreds of miles to the Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock yesterday to visit Martin Tankleff, the Belle Terre man convicted of the Sept. 7, 1988, killings of his parents, Arlene and Seymour Tankleff, on the day he was to start his senior year of high school.
A spokeswoman for HBO confirmed Gandolfini met with Tankleff, who is serving a 50-years-to-life sentence.
Tankleff and his supporters say he was coerced into confessing to the murders by an overzealous detective who tricked him into saying he had committed the murders.
Tankleff's supporters said Gandolfini learned of the case through Great Neck-based private investigator Jay Salpeter, a former New York Police Department homicide detective, who gathered witnesses and evidence for Tankleff's evidentiary hearing. The case is now pending before the state appellate division.

Re: Tony Soprano supports Marty Tankleff
Wow. I just visited the website...
I cannot believe anyone took that "confession" letter seriously. There are more holes in that than a brick of Swiss cheese
This is such an incredible injustice.
