Tooth Extraction/Dental Implants & Bone Grafting
I was just wondering if anyone has had these procedures done and can help me out.
I'm going back to the endodontist this coming Tuesday to see if an infection has cleared up and they can perform a root canal, or if the tooth needs to be extracted. I saw an oral surgeon today who told me that he could fit me in on Tuesday if the tooth needs to be extracted.
He spoke to me about dental implants and bone grafting, and I'm wondering if this is done immediately after the extraction and what the recovery is for these procedures.
I'm nervous because I'm leaving for a cruise on Saturday and don't want this to impact my vacation.
Is there a lot of pain following the procedures? Will it limit what I can/cannot eat and drink? Are antibiotics prescribed after the extraction? Aside from going away, I'm also currently on antibiotics and was just on them for ten days a week ago to try and clear this up, so I'm not thrilled about having to be on them again.
Any information is greatly appreciated. This has been an ongoing dental disaster since last September that I just want to be over.

I don't know a lot about the implant process personally, but from family members that have it, it is a long process. It won't be done before your vacation. I have also been told it can be very painful.

No, I know the whole process won't be completed by my trip. I think just the extraction and bone grafting.

Re: Tooth Extraction/Dental Implants & Bone Grafting
I am in the process of getting an implant. If they extract the tooth, the bone grafting is done at the same time. I was put to sleep for the extraction/bone grafting. Is that an option for you?
There really is not a lot of pain involved. Sore for the first day and then I was ok. They do give painkillers. I ate soft things the night it was done, but then went back to eating regular the next day. And yes, they do give antibiotics to take.
If you have any other questions - ask away.

Thank you so much, this was helpful!
I was really hoping to avoid the antibiotics since I just had 7 days of them that finished last Monday, and just started another 7 days of them today, so I'll still be on them when I have either the root canal or extraction and bone grafting.
I've also been on them for three other separate occasions within the last 6 months for ear pain, which I suspect was really pain from the tooth that went misdiagnosed.

Re: Tooth Extraction/Dental Implants & Bone Grafting
I am going through this process now. I had to get a tooth removed because of an infection (caused by root canal I believe). When the tooth was extracted, they did the bone grafting at the same time. Then I had to wait 4-5 months for the implant. I am currently waiting for the crown while the implant heals for another 4-5 months.
Are you in pain? If not then I would personally wait until after the cruise if it is somewhat soon, I don't know that I would have started the process before a vacation I had planned. I was in pain for a few days and fine by a week after.
ETA I was given penicilin after the extraction and implant placement.. instructed to eat only soft foods for a day or two.

My father just had this all done. Not too much pain but the process was almost a year in length and was ALOT of money. For your cruise I'd just ask him to make it comfortable. You won't be able to have anything fixed before then.

No pain in the tooth. Only recently, since about Sunday, my ear has been hurting and a spot under my jaw. Occasionally when I eat it feels like I'm biting down on the tooth, and I find that when I exercise it throbs a bit but not terribly. The biggest thing is this nagging ache in my ear/cheek/jaw that lasts a few hours towards the end of the day.
I asked him if the extraction can wait until I get back from vacation, and he said it's a double edged sword...I can wait and be totally fine on the trip, or I can wait and be in a lot of pain.
He seems to think that doing the procedures on Tuesdag will give me enough recovery time by Saturday.

Re: Tooth Extraction/Dental Implants & Bone Grafting
I can't speak to the implant as I decided against it- my tooth was all the way in the back and the implant was so pricey so I just left the hole . But I can tell you my extraction wasn't bad at all...i was awake, just a shit ton of Novocaine and didn't feel a thing. When it wore off I didn't need the painkillers he prescribed, just motrin. I had a wisdom tooth done at the same time on the same side too. So 2 teeth extracted.
Went back to work the next day. Ate soft foods for a day or so and was fine.
If you need it extracted before your cruise, you should be ok. The implant etc will happen afterwards

Thanks! I wish I could avoid the implant because of the price, but unfortunately it's the second to last molar so still a bit visible :/

Re: Tooth Extraction/Dental Implants & Bone Grafting
Done all 3. Tooth extraction and bone grafting was done the same day. Pain is really not that bad. Only took pain medication that first day and the second day I was back to work. I then waited 4-5 months for the first stage of dental implants. That was more painful but again heavy meds and was back to work the next day. I go back next month for the final stage. It's a long process and a very expensive one. Can't wait to be done.

Can I ask how much the whole process is costing you? So far I know the bone grafting will cost $500.

Yeah, this is around what I'm paying too. I need one more after this, but I have no choice but to wait. These things are expensive.

For me, when everything is added up it is going to cost me around 4,500.
I guess it depends on where you go... my process is between the oral surgeon and the regular dentist.
The Oral Surgeon charged $500 for bone graft, $1250 for implant (after my insurance paid $600 of it). Insurance paid for extraction.
Dentist- a little over $700 for flipper (to wear on site until I get crown since its in a visible place). Then for the abutment and Crown, I think it is going to cost me around 2k but i'm not at that point yet, so i'm not 100% sure.

Paid $500 for bone grafting, $3200 per implant. ETS: Also had to pay $250 or so for an x-ray that was not covered by my insurance.

Yes I was going to suggest this too- if they can do a bridge off a neighboring tooth, you'd save a ton. Implants are insanely expensive.

Thanks again everyone.
I went back to the oral surgeon today, and he decided to drain the abscess since I was so swollen. He said because I'm young, an extraction and implant wouldn't be something he wants to just jump to. So we're trying this and stronger antibiotics to see if the infection clears up!

Me too. The implant was expensive, time consuming and I wanted it done ASAP so I went with bridge.
