Re: torticollis

My older son had it. His case was mild vs some of the pictures I found on the internet. He had a tilt that I really never noticed till his pediatrician had us see a physiologist. It was remedied with physical therapy, it wasnt a major issue at all.

Re: torticollis

Thank you for your posts. I was so worried when my DD got the diagnosis and now I feel better. She is only 3 weeks old and will be starting physical therapy.

My son has torticollis...we realized he had that issue when he was around 8 weeks. It's great that you found out so early...

My son has been going to PT since he was about 10 weeks, and he was recently discharged a few weeks ago (when he turned 6 months of age). The therapy is fantastic...but it's not really what they do in the office that works...it's what you do at home with your child (of course, go to PT...you learn so much from the therapists, and you will learn what to do at home).

The other common condition associated with tortocollis is positional plagiocephaly...it sounds scary, but it's more of a cosmetic thing...flattening of the head on one side, due to the fact that the muscles are short or tight in the neck and the baby favors one side. Your child is only three weeks old, and since you caught this so early, I'm sure you will be quite lucky in avoiding the whole plagiocephaly thing.

Good luck, and let me know if I can do anything. Chat Icon

How do you know if you need therapy? At my DD's 1 month appt the dr said one side was flatter and then at the 2 month appt they said it's getting better. But I can def feel the difference that one side is flatter than the other. At night i make sure she sleeps on the side thats not flat but is there something else i should be doing?

Did your MD say DD had torticollis?

With my DS, it was quite evident...he would only sleep on one side...and he always wanted to twist his head to his right, and the flattening was very severe (the MDs were originally worried that he could have craniosynostosis...thank god he did not).

I don't mean to freak you out...just wanted you to know that our son was severe, and I don't know if PT is necessary for mild cases.

He never meantioned that word and she will go from side to side but it just that she favors one over another. I guess I should just ask next month at her 4 month visit. I'm glad your son doesn't have craniosysnostosis!
