Totally Bizarre phone call my FIL got this morning...
My MIL passed away a little over 3 years ago now, and my FIL chose to have her ashes dispersed at sea.
So today the funeral parlor called him, saying Mr. C, we have the remains of your wife here and were wondering when you would like to come pick them up.
What the freakin heck?!?!?!?!
So he tells them that he paid for her ashes to be dispersed at sea over 3 years ago, and they got all flustered, said that they'd have to call him back.
Then another person from the funeral home called him back a few minutes later, and said that it was a new employee and he was looking at the wrong log book to make his phone calls. They apologized for the mix-up.
That's SOME mixup! And now it has me thinking! I hope that my FIL/MIL's wishes were carried through with. It's kind of unsettling that we'll never really know.

To call the wrong person is one thing. But to call someone from 3 years ago is odd.
Unless they aren't a popular funeral home there is no reason why a passing of someone from 3 years ago should be in their "current" records.
I think you should follow up.
When my grandfathers ashes were dispersed at sea and I am pretty sure we received a certificate/statement once it was completed. Do you know if your FIL received such documentation?

WOWWWW that would really bother me. I think I'd even go to the funeral parlor in person, to see how they would handle this face to face.. 
Trying FMing Valerie, she's a funeral Director, forgot her new screen name, she recently changed it..
I hope this gets figured out, hows your FIL feeling about it ?

I do think that he recieved a certificate --- I think I remember my DH showing me a map --- like a nautical map that we had no idea how to read.
My FIL didn't really share much of the details about it with my DH and his brother, which has always bothered them. They always wished they had a place that they could go to "visit" their mom.
As far as how my FIL is feeling, my DH just said that he thought it was disturbing. I don't know if he is going to follow through in any way on it....or if he'd want me to do it.

It's just sad that this happened. Even if he doesnt do anything about it, Im sure it will be on his mind.
I think he deserves an explanation or at least a sincere apology in person if it truly was a mistake.. just to give him closure once again, if that makes sense.

oh god that's so upsetting.
i would be really worried about that-- it would weigh on my mind.
it's kinda like when they buried my grammy and my grandaddy... out at calverton. they do not let you go to the grave (plot) with the coffin/body. you need to say goodbye at this little place near the parking lot and then leave-- THEN they take the coffin and bury it in their plot... ummm but what if they make a mistake?? how do i know that my grammy and grandaddy are in their right spaces?? you never really know that... and i can't even see them go where they belong-- it was very unsettling to me... it still bothers me to this day. i go there and pray and it ALWAYS crosses my mind of-- what if i'm praying to someone else and my grandparents are six plots away??
i'm so sorry for you and your FIL... how traumatic
