totally hypothetical...but something I was thinking about
If you were a prominent public figure whose life had been threatened and had small children who could also be in some kind of danger b/c of YOUR choices in life, what would you do?
I honestly think I would either have them home schooled or send them away, incognito, like Aurora from Sleeping Beauty.
It would be one thing for me to risk my own life, and go about my daily business in spite of the threats...but I don't know if I could extend that danger to my children.
if you were in that position, would you do anything different in that regard?

Part of being a public figure is also having family in the public sphere and they all grow up knowing the risks/dangers with such a position. I've read memoirs of presidents since FDR and although the general public freaks out, they grew up around the danger and they learned what to watch out for, how to protect themselves, and continue on with their daily lives.
I would ensure that my family had the necessary protection (Secret Service, FBI or a privately paid security company) watching my family and just continue trying to live a "normal" life - whatever is normal for public figures.

Sadly I think it is part of the package. Its like being an actress, you know paps take your pic when you are out. So you know they are going to continue to do so when you have children.

Honestly, I would probably back out of what I was doing that was putting myself and my family in harm's way. Sending my kids away is not fair to them or myself but niether is having their lives at risk because of something I CHOOSE to do.
But then again, who knows what I would actually do if I were in that situation in real life.

I agree. I wouldn't want my children shipped off to boarding school or away from me. It's bad enough to be in a job that limits your family time.

I've thought about this before, and the fact that Obama's kids have probably been threatened also (Palin's may be as well for all we know).
I wouldn't run. I just couldn't put my family at risk, but I don't fault those who do run by any means.

I am torn about this and posted yesterday.
This is what I think.
Aren't we fighting for freedom and the right to be free? Freedom does not have to be taken by people from other countries.
By stepping down, it shows that we do give up our freedom, our right to to pursue our dream and aspirations regardless of our race, color, gender, etc...
But stepping in darkness by fear of what could happen it is sending the message that tyrans will win.
At this point in the race, I would not step down.
Of course, I would consult with DH PRIOR to engaging in such venture.
I am sure Obama has discussed with his wife the "possibility" and they are on the same page.
