Town of hempstead animal shelter
DH and I brought a dog to the TOH animal shelter with the belief that it was a no kill shelter (they specifically told us they keep all dogs as long as they are in good health). We've received several emails telling us that this information isn't true? We're going to visit the dog tomorrow to put our name on a last resort list. Does anyone know the truth about whether or not it's a no kill shelter?

Re: Town of hempstead animal shelter
I don't know about that one specifically, but I used to work for a private no-kill animal shelter and can tell you that NY state law prohibits private shelters from taking in animals from the public. So what happens is you have to bring the dog to a municipal shelter, which are usually not no-kill. The no-kill shelters go to the municipal shelters and take as many animals as they have room for. Many times animals are shipped to no-kills all over the country. Municipal shelters do try to get the animals to no-kill shelters.
If you had left the animal in a box at a private no-kill like North Shore Animal League they would have to turn it over to their local municipal shelter anyway.

I have heard from the director that it is no kill as long as the dog is in goo dhealth. I know he went out and purchaed a lot of new cages on wheels to maximize the # of animals they can keep there.
