Town of hempstead animal shelter
DH and I brought a dog to the TOH animal shelter with the belief that it was a no kill shelter (they specifically told us they keep all dogs as long as they are in good health). We've received several emails telling us that this information isn't true We're going to visit the dog tomorrow to put our name on a last resort list. Does anyone know the truth about whether or not it's a no kill shelter?

I believe they are a kill shelter. North Shore rescues dogs from them all the time.

It is a kill shelter. I am not sure of their "turn around" time though.
When we found a lost beagle several months ago I am pretty sure the guy behind the counter told us that the dog had 10 days.
Luckily we found the owner on our own.

It's definitely a kill shelter. Paige was brought there first before Little Shelter took her...

This is a kill shelter. They were going to put my Pit mix to sleep when he was 4 months old but Little Shelter in huntington rescued him.

Same with our Maddie ... Almost Home rescued her from them within a day of her being dropped there. Can you imagine putting down a 4 month old pure bred lab?

We went down there today and put our name down as a last resort. I can't stand the though of bringing a dog there and then him being put to sleep. I"m going to post pics and info of him incase anyone is interested.

Town of Hempstead is a kill shelter and so many of North Shores animals wind up there because North Shore does not take back all adoptionr eturns, North Shore is not rescuing from Town of Hempstead, they are taking back "some" of their animals, others will die. Don't believe me? Call North Shore and pretend you adopted a dog and now you want to return a year later, see what they say, happens all the time, their animals are everywhere.
